I would like to rate this heater higher, but for several reasons I can't. I have purchased several of these, mostly the 100 watt size. They have a couple of really nice features. I like having the controller outside the tank (who doesn't) and while "shatterproof" glass heaters are ok, for any substantial size turtle or larger fish a heater needs to be truly unbreakable. This heater takes a lot of abuse. No matter how much it's clawed or kicked about it neither breaks, breaks anything else (thanks to the rubber ends), or loses it's setting. It does get very hot (duh) and for reptiles or amphibians and even some fish it should be encased in a protective mesh/cage of some kind. I use the plastic mesh tubes from Magnum micron filters which happen to fit nicely.

The drawbacks with this heater however are rather serious.
It's relatively expensive considering it's flaws. Others also dislike the short warranty period, but that I never even noticed. If something breaks before I believe it should I toss it and buy a different brand....sheer laziness or unwillingness to sweat the small stuff - call it what you will. Anyway, if that matters to you, apparently it is only a few months and like most warranties you still have to pay something.
Individual reliability and general lifespan are both poor. If you get one that doesn't seem to work properly out of the box, my advice would be to send it back right away. When these guys work, they work great. They may not be spot on the exact temperature on the dial, but it should be close and it should maintain it very very well.
They definitely do not age well, two to five years seems about all you can expect even from a well performing unit before it give out.
These heaters should not be used singly, no heater should.

If you have a Fluval Spec V (or another type of nano tank), I would recommend this heater based on my experience so far. (have been using for close to a month)

The 3 best features:
1. small size with enough power to get the job done
2. the controls are on the outside of the tank making it easy to adjust without ever having to move the heater.
3. it is metal instead of glass. therefore, a lot more durable.

The reasons I did not rate 5 stars:
1. when the heating element turns on/off, the controls make a pretty loud click. This can be a little annoying at night if you are trying to sleep next to it. (all aq. heaters do this, but most are quieter because they are underwater)
2. I wish the cord length between the heater and controller was a bit longer so it would be easier to hide the controller.

Bottom line: This heater is tough and keeps the water of my 5.6 gallon tank evenly heated at 77-78 degreed F. I suspect it would have no trouble with a bit larger tank too (the controls allow form more heat than that). It is convenient to use, and very compact.

side note: the instructions say to only position the heater horizontally, but I have had no trouble leaving it vertical in the hidden pump compartment of my Spec V.

UPDATE: 2 months in the tank and still going strong.

...immediately after the warranty period is over. I have had the heater master controller break on 3 different occasions and repaired, not replaced, by Finnex for $10-15 each time. It will last for another 6-9 months. When you are dealing w/your heater in the aquarium, you have to be very careful.

Concurrently, I purchased 3 Finnex titanium heaters with controllers and 2 of them have gone dead (luckily in the "off" position) within a month after the warranty period. Luckily, the Finnex controllers are connected to Medusa controllers---which are worth the money...the Medusas have worked perfectly for 5+ years. Yes, it's overkill with the controllers, but the lack of reliability with the Finnex heaters and controllers makes it imperative that I have a safety net the won't allow the Finnex heater/controller to boil my aquarium.

Buy a Finnex frameless aquarium, they look fantastic...but think twice before you consider Finnex heaters or controllers...if you must buy it, connect another controller to govern the Finnex product.

I bought the Finnex heaters and controllers because of the reputation of their tanks. Unfortunately, the reputation, and more so the reliability, did not extend to their heating product line. Save yourself some grief and heed my words.

This heater has been very consistent in our 10gal tank. I like that the temperature control sits outside of the water for easy access (although it is not needed once you set the tank to the right temperature.)

Keep in mind that the temperature number is more of a guiding number. Your tank will interact with the room temperature, so the real temperature in the tank will be somewhere between the outside temp and the heater set temp. Our 10 gal tank is set to 82, and the room temp is 70. Under these settings the in-tank thermometer keeps steady at 78. The same is true for a different heater we have in our 30 gal tank. I recommend setting your tank by the thermometer reading.

Another thing worth noting is that the suction cups don't do their job too well. It seems that one or the other is always coming off, which gets a bit annoying over the long run.
