First the bad, this is a novella. At 150ish pages I wouldn't even put this towards my Reading Challenge if it wasn't such a great read. There are also a couple editing misses. These are few and far between so they really don't take too much away from the story.
Now the great. Brazee has created another interesting universe where humanity seems alone in the galaxy. Until another race is found. The characters are rich and colorful with strengths and weaknesses that you can believe. The action sequences are a short but very intense and each one builds the overall story without taking focus from the characters that drive it. I am waiting for the third installment because I've already read the second. I think I'll have to look into more from Brazee.
My only critique would be that it's obvious (having read almost all his books) that he is very good at writing realistic (sometimes bordering on obsessive) ground combat, including some tank action in other series. Those are clearly in his wheelhouse as a retired Marine. Here though he's writing more about space battles. The scenes themselves don't come alive quite as much as his other battle stories. I'm sure as he moves forward with this series those skills will be fleshed out a little more.
