With countless early 80's Euro bands cutting out what would be eventually morph into thrash and speed metal, it's hard to really decipher which ones were the real legends here. Bands like Saxon, Venom, Motorhead, Raven, Diamond Head, Iron Maiden, Jaguar, Avenger and to a lesser extent Varis are often credited with the moniker of inventing speed metal. However there were heaps more groups that in their own ways carved out immense contributions whether it be in the guise of a single/EP or album (bands like Blitzkreig, Hollow Ground, Sweet Savage, Savage, Virtue, Fist, Sledgehammer, Demon Pact, Warrior, Acid, Burn, and even Paralex were also there to along with tons of other to this day oscure bands like Scratch, Mendes Prey, Voltz, Legend, Aragorn etc) being mentioned in the net trades of collectors and those in "the know". Oz's 1983 album Fire In The Brain is def a true masterpiece that should be more known, at to the somewhat famous ranks of say Venom or Tygers Of Pan Tang. Starting off with Search Lights, this is Metallica's Kill Em All forumula done before them. And with killer "biker" style Saxon/Savage metal cuts like Fortune, Gambler, and the guitar tap intro'ed Megalomaniac, this album reveals quickly to the unfamiliar listener that they may not know everything about metal. Although some may find a distaste for the more slower and sort-of ballad-ey Black Candles, it's immensely atmosphereric and the riff itself plods along in brutal fashion, making another heavily key cut here. Stop Believin' and Free Me Leave Me are also just, downright amazing. The album returns to the speed for it's title track and while it may be the weakest cut I think, there is nothing bad in the slightest bit about this album.Read more ›

OZ is a band that sounds like it could have been from England and part of the late 70s/early 80s NWOBHM movement. And that is a good thing! But this band is from Finland, and 'Fire in the Brain" is OZ's best album.
This album is a straight forward, no thrills, in your face Metal meltdown! Stand out tracks are the opener '" Search Lights" the slower " Black Candles" and the title track " Fire in the Brain" closes this album out nice.
Highly recommended for fans of true classic heavy metal. Bands like Saxon, Motorhead, Mercyful Fate, Iron Maiden and Venom.

I bought the original vinyl album way back when and have always wanted to get it again. I was thrilled to find it still available. When I finally got my copy I immediately threw it in my car stereo and was thrilled with what I heard. If you have not heard these guys you are missing out on a great band that not a whole lot of people are aware of. Great traditional metal sound with plenty of tasty guitar solos. Search lights, Fortune, and Black Candles are my three favorites off this album. It's hard to describe the style of music, the best I can do is a mid tempo thrash for most of the songs and a gothic, doom feel to Black Candles. With over 2000 CDs in my collection, I would have to say that this one is the one I'm most proud of owning again.

For all heavy metal buffs who prefer slow, low thunder riffs (Sabbath style) mixed with high speed lead guitar attacks (Metallica style). This album is perfect and a lost gem. I never thought I would ever find this album available. It is available in its entirety from Amazon digital downloads. I bought this cassette back around 1984. I could never find it on CD. I am going to purchase it as a Christmas gift to .......me! (who else?). Long Live OZ Fire in the Brain!

Like the above reviewer, I never though I would find this album again! I still have yet to get it on CD, but Fire In the Brain really rocks! My personal favorites are "Search Lights" and "Black Candles", but there are many others as well that get the juices flowing. I highly reccommend this album for those who appreciate good, solid, Heavy Metal...
