Eli and Mackenzie are strong characters who were secretly in love during their teen years, planning to get married, when inexplicably, Eli left town and joined the Marines. In her turn, the heartbroken Mackenzie moved on with goals at film school.
Ten years later, she’s back in town to film a documentary and Eli is thinking that perhaps this could be his chance to make things right. Only drawback is, she doesn’t know the complete truth, and he swears he’d never tell her.
I love small town romances. They make for an easy read that’s big on the feel-good factor, and I enjoyed this one.
Eli Bishop is a firefighter in his hometown. Many years ago he lost his girl that one night to his everlasting regret. He ended up in the military, finished his stint, and came back, and still pining for her... Until his girl came back to town. Mackenzie Sutton left her hometown behind, after having her heart thoroughly broken. She achieved her dream of being a documentary filmmaker, but she always wondered what happened when her man left her behind. When her latest project took her back to her hometown, it's inevitable Kenzie will run into Eli, and all the pain that came back. And this time, truth will be revealed, old wounds will bleed... and the two will finally learn what drove them apart... and whether they belong together after all.
Without spoiling the story, let's just say Eli's initial departure was not completely voluntary, despite the plans he and Mackenzie made together in solemn promise. But they have to understand their past to have a future. The characters are relatable, if a bit of a fragile ego, in that they somehow NEVER tried to contact each other, but that's also a trope in itself.
Mackenzie Sutton is filming a documentary following an MMA fighter through training to a big fight. The fighter, Gabe, is Hope Falls fire chief's cousin & Gabe is going to train in Hope Falls. Mackenzie is excited about the opportunity to see Gabe get the acknowledgements he deserves but also to spend time with her best friend, Deanna again. She just isn't aware the Eli lives in Hope Falls too.
The writing duo of Melanie Shawn has done it again. Eli & Mackenzie are a great couple. All of the characters are well developed & three dimensional. The readers are engaged from the very beginning by Eli & the idea of a broken engagement. The interactions between Eli & Mackenzie keep you involved due to the chemistry & the fight to resist it. The town of Hope Falls has so many wonderful characters & it's great to catch up on them. This is one series I don't think I'll ever tire of.

There was regular talk about Kenzies brother from both main characters and they both went to visit him at different stages of the story but we never got to see that meeting. Why?
I felt a little let down by the author for not including him. I thought towards the end that we might finally meet him, but no. I hope that if a complex character such as Kenny is spoken about in another of Melanie Shawn's books we will actually get to meet them. As someone that knows someone that has suffered a brain injury I know that they can be the most loving and sweetest people around. No need to keep them in the dark and shut them away which is what felt the author did, though i doubt it was intentional.
Eli and Kenzie have both managed to find their way to their perfect jobs, but there is still a huge piece of their hearts missing, pieces that the other holds. Neither one have been able to move forward, both are still completely in love with each other but there is a LOT of heartbreak and pain to work through before they can even begin to forgive each other and then the final and biggest hurdle........can they forgive themselves?
This book is overflowing with lust, steam and passion, another amazing addition to the fantastic Hope Falls collection.
