So, 100% marks so far on account of enjoyment. However, must deduct a couple of percentage points for below average standard of proof reading:
# On the whole, punctuation very good but with periodic aberrations that tripped me up during speed reading and made me go back a sentence or two for a read-through at slower speed.
# I suspect author fell victim to sole reliance on spellcheck, e.g. “decent” rather than intended “descent” or autofill, e.g. “recognisance “ instead of “reconnaissance”.
# Sloppy on some proper names, e.g. “MV Augusta” should be ”…Agusta”, “Camel Laird” should be “Cammell …. “. Military rucksacks referred to randomly as “Bergens” or “Bergans”. Googling suggests two alleged sources of the name, resulting in the A/E difference. OK but choose one, then stick to it.
# GrammarNazi alert!! It’s minuscule, not miniscule. Surprising lapse, considering all the other
common pitfalls skilfully avoided.
Despite this rant (which was fun in itself for me!), I thoroughly enjoyed all the books.
Full frontal violence and attention to gory details make for a very fast-paced and action-packed read. I think THE FIRE is an excellent sequel to THE FIX while the characters (good and bad) are realistic and very scary. The story is only too believable and unlike American crime novels cuts to the quick without allowing the reader time to draw breath. Reading this book is a very up-close-and-personal experience as you get caught up in the violence in the full knowledge that Robert is showing you the very real and 'seedy' underbelly of our society.
I have only one complaint, well two actually. Firstly, the story ended too quickly for me, and secondly, I don't want to wait another year for the next installment.
Recommended reading for all UK crime-thriller readers.
It was like meeting old friends after couple of years and could not wait to catch up with all their goings on. The story unfolds as told by the three characters which is nice for the reader to get a different thought process and way to view things.
Rick Fuller - the gorgeous grande bastard extraordinaire shines with his delish arrogance and taste for all things ludicrously expensive and fast. There are times when he is not just cool - sometimes he is simply glacier. But this time his heart muscle gets a bit of an work out too and this cynical man gets to show a feeling or two.
Des Cogan is not the tallest man but the man with the biggest heart and fondness of Guinness. He has ease of confidence and I fell in love with him just a little bit more this time. I bawled my eyes out and sobbed uncontrollably when he went to see his ex wife. That does not take away the fact that he is a calculating and dangerous son of a bitch killer when required.
Lauren North - GET IN GIRL! I Love this fiercely practical woman who does not suffer fools gladly and holds her own like one of the boys. But it was interesting to see what the price of killing in cold blood was for her even when it is totally justified. This poor lady got beaten and hurt more than the guys but I am most grateful for the author for not killing her off.
Then there is the new boy J.J Yakim whom I actually already met in this authors other book. He is almost soulless bad ass with black eyes and most of his body covered in scars. He does not have a narrative voice but he totally piqued my interest. Although if I met him in real life I would cross the road sharpish.
What else can I say.....expect that I sincerely recommend this book to anyone who likes their thrills and spills of action and intrigue with this extraordinary bunch of most entertaining characters. Good job!
I recommend this book to all lovers of a violent thriller with lots of fast paced action.
Robert please don't make us wait for such a long time for the next book, especially after that shocking ending.
