Ellison Jones is used to sirens in the night (unfortunately, they’re usually coming to her house).

So, it’s a surprise when the sirens that wake her from the dead come from across the street.

Nosy neighbor Marian Dixon’s house is on fire.

Luckily, the Dixons are out of town.

Unluckily, there’s a body found in the ashes—a body not killed by the fire.

With Ellison’s husband, Detective Anarchy Jones, investigating, the neighbors are eager for a quick resolution. But a cunning killer has other plans.

Can Ellison and Anarchy uncover the truth, or will their lives (and the rest of the block) go up in flames?

Julie Mulhern is the USA Today bestselling author of The Country Club Murders and the Poppy Fields Adventures.

She is a Kansas City native who grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie. She spends her spare time whipping up gourmet meals for her family, working out at the gym and finding new ways to keep her house spotlessly clean--and she's got an active imagination. Truth is--she's an expert at calling for take-out, she grumbles about walking the dog and the dust bunnies under the bed have grown into dust lions.

Action, adventure, mystery, and humor are the things Julie loves when she's reading. She loves them even more when she's writing!

This is the best book in the series so far. I have read all of the Country Club Murder series, and listened to the ones available on audio (narrator Callie Beaulieu is terrific!) I enjoy the character development, the peek into the 1970s, and the mysteries presented. These are books where I don't try and figure out 'who dun'it.' Instead, I just relax and let an excellent story teller walk me through the book. I don't know what the original ending for this book was to be, but the one she presents is fantastic.

Ellison did not find the body this time, Anarchy did. The dog, Max, awakens Ellison in the middle of the night because the house across the street belonging o the cantankerous Mrs. Dixon, is on fire. Anarchy heroically goes into the house to see if anyone is present and saves a cat. While there he sees a body he cannot rescue. It turns out not to be anyone who lives there but a former resident of the town who has moved to New York. He definitely was murdered. Ellison and Anarchy go through a range of suspects in the neighborhood before they identify the killer. A kid in the neighborhood who is on the swim team is quite neglected by his parents. Ellison becomes a surrogate parent during this novel as it appears that his parents are going to get a divorce. This is a heart warming tangent in this novel. The climax of the novel comes quickly and somewhat unexpectedly. There is a twist at the end that is very interesting and appealing. I rate this novel 9 of 10.

I am in awe of this writer! Every single one of her books is amazing, and they get better and better. This is my favorite, so far, and I say that about each one. This one is full of humor and mystery, and the ending was exquisite! If you have never read any of this series, do yourself a favor and pick one up today. You can read this one as a stand-alone, but you will enjoy it more if you start with the first and read them in order. I intend to go back and read them all again in order, and then re-read this one. They are that good! Thank you, Julie, for this wonderful book. I will patiently (kind of) wait for the next one!

As someone who has thoroughly enjoyed the Country Club murders from the very beginning, I have to say they're just getting better and better. Still a quick, fun read, I love how Mulhern mixes in a gentle treatment of more serious themes (in this case, the way one of the families has been treating their young son) and how she's willing to mix things up a little. Or a lot. As always, Ellison's narrative voice is perfect with dry wit and the occasional snarky commentary, and the relationships between the characters are very well done. This is why I'm always so excited to see new additions to this fantastic series.

I love this series. Sometimes I figure out the mystery before the end but the books are still good. I've realized in series the characters ate what keeps me coming back. I so enjoy the visit with people I like in each book.

Another great addition to this series! What sets this series apart is the wonderful characters and the witty dialogue. The mystery was well-paced and the central focus of the book but the “polite” interaction with the country club set adds depth and humor to the series. I love everything about this series and can’t wait to see what happens next.

I say it each time, but I don't know how the author can make a book better than the last, when the last was SO good.
But Ms. Mulhern did it - again!
First let me say, I am afraid of Francis myself.
That said....Ellison and Anarchy are a great couple, the heavens aligned and put them together where they balance each other so much, it is as if there was never another for either of them. You smile when Ellison has continual flutters caused by her hubs, and how Anarchy protects without being overbearing. . .this time the crime took them both by surprise in the dead of night. To start with, Anarchy saves the cat from the burning house, which of course Ellison gets blamed for by a couple of folks, daughter included; yet between the two of them, 'aha' moments come at the oddest times. The possible bad-guy characters are hard to put a finger on because the red herrings just keep on floating through the book. Grace is growing to become a wonderful young woman, athletic and now into boys more so than hanging with Mom, yet so appreciative of her Mom and Anarchy always being there for her. Francis may chastise her daughter at whim, but stands up for her with her frosty stance, words and looks. With the swim season and trials going on, we are introduced to a new young man, and as he moved through the book, I found myself hoping he'd be a continuing kiddo in the series, but completely unable to figure out how since his parents were not friends of Ellison's. However, during the story, new friends are made, and I am quite sure they will be regulars in this fabulous series as well. Ellison pulls her own weight quite well being a good Mom and a great friend to the new young fellow as well, at swim meets and he and his dog visiting them often. And of course ideas of who the culprit of the fire and murder are...of course it is found out (and I didn't have a good idea until the end) of who it was; but the ending was not only good the 'bad guy' was found out, but the ending after that end? A surprise not seen coming and an outstanding climax, a new add to an already fabulous series.
