I wish I had tried this out at home. Instead, my first use of it was when I pulled it out of it's box and set it up at our camp. The grill is very poorly made and would not assemble properly. Once you fold open the grill, you're supposed to swing out the side panels and clip them to the opposing door. The clip are incapable of holding on to the opposing side of the grill. You have to use the actual grilling rack to hold it all together. This gets a lot worse once the grill is warmed up. If you disturb the grilling rack, the grill will pop open another inch. It's incredibly unstable.
Take a look at the pictures to see exactly what I'm talking about. Judging by comments from a couple years ago, the quality of this grill has declined significantly.
I received this grill last week and have already tossed it in the recycle bin. A charming waste of money.
I plan on using this grill on the river, it will be sitting on rocks, sand, and gravel. My cousins have used the same grill and it gets the job done.
It works well for simple grilling application. It's very small, so unless you want to squat I recommend a small metal table (I used a mesh outdoors table). From there, I would place a pan underneath the grill for both stability and to prevent the soot and or hot charcoal from falling through the tiny holes in the bottom.
I wish this item were easier to clean. It really is a pain as there is no good way to carry it somewhere to dump it in the trash. Since this item is used mostly for small patio applications (I suppose camping as well) it doesn't make sense why it is so difficult to clean. It folds up, which is a great feature for storage, but try walking with it full of soot after everything is cooled and it will begin to collapse and soot gets everywhere. I soon learned a little tin foil in the bottom to set the charcoal on is helpful for clean-up. Also, the joints where the grill collapses become weak when the grill is heated. I had to JB Weld mine back together after just a few uses, which was frustrating. The grates also warp as they heat, making them a little wonky in the grill.
This would be great for tailgating as well because of the portability of the item. There are some flaws, but if you want a cheap, portable grill or are desperate for a juicy hamburger on the grill, this is a good item. It's cheap and it gets the job kind of done.
No, seriously! This grill folds up and has a handle to easy storage and carrying. The assembly is quick however the grate that hold the two sides together has some technical issues - this was resolved with a bit of adjusting the grill sides to fit the grate. (Hint: do not do this while the coals are lit. Yup. Learned a lesson.)
Aside from that, this was perfect for a tiny backyard. I purchased this because both of my folks are getting on in years and yearned for a cookout. Since they cannot make it to the park, I brought the park to them. The look on their faces when they had a grilled hot dog is priceless.
Grill, grates and charcoal can all fit inside a large bag. (I used a bag from A.C. Moore.)
A hint: put heavy duty aluminum foil under the grill to catch the dripping and the ash. Makes for easy cleanup.)
