The excitement begins on the first page as the reader finds the story taking place in church on a Sunday morning as a tornado is on its way, unknowing to the church's occupants. The book starts at this pace and does not disappoint as the excitement and intrigue continues.

The history of this small town and its inhabitants is magical and moving. The relationships are constructed very well, with a depth and fullness that makes the story one that will remain long after the final page is read. There is a very special attachment that the reader finds when he or she reads a Lazar story. The closest I can find to describe it is true family and an association that lives inspite of it being only a literary reality with created characters and written happenings.

I personally have read all three of Mr. Lazar's series and have loved each one immensely. If you are a lover of a good story that keeps you guessing with many twists and turns and yet has a real life feel, any of Mr. Lazar's stories are for you.

When Aaron Lazar contacted me and asked if I'd be interested in reviewing his latest book, FireSong, it didn't take long for me to say yes. Having read and enjoyed his coming-of-age mystery, Tremolo: call of the loon a couple of years back, I was eager for another sampling of this author's work. I was especially eager to read FireSong because the story is set in my own back yard, in the beautiful Genesee Valley.

The story's synopsis promised an interesting mystery with colorful characters, and that's exactly what it delivered.

A professor of music at a local University, Gus LeGarde is looking forward to his summer sabbatical -- to long, lazy days spent tending his vegetable garden and spending time with his grandchildren. But when a tornado tears through the valley one quiet Sunday morning and unearths the remains of missing townsperson, Colin Springer, Gus' plans for a relaxing summer begin to unravel.

Little does Gus know that the tornado is only the first of many strange occurrences that will plague the small town of East Goodland over the next few weeks. As controversy over the reopening of the nearby salt mine heats up, the local pastor finds himself the target of a dangerous criminal's wrath. One humid summer night, the pastor's car crashes into a tree in front of Gus' house. The pastor is taken to the hospital, his blood stream full of heroin.

While Gus works with the local police to try and sort through the chaos, his wife, Camille, discovers a secret room in their century-old farmhouse-- a discovery which leads her to believe the home's original owner, Mary Hill, may have had connections to the Underground Railroad.

I loved the two plots woven together in this book- a tale of the underground railroad, and a denouement in a modern underground salt mine. I suspect this appeals to me so much because as I child I was fascinated by both of these- the strong desire of slaves to be free, and caverns of any kind. Some people might think the scenes in the salt mines are a bit far fetched, but I grew up not far from them, and they are very real and certainly a perfect setting for scenes of this book. Lazar continues to develop the personalities of Gus and Camille as they settle in to life together and become a strong force in their neighborhood.

FireSong is the first book I have read from the author Aaron Lazar. I did not know what to expect. The first thing that caught my attention is the author's smooth writing style. The second thing is the never ending twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the end of the book.

The story kept me under a spell I could not put it down until I finished reading it.
There are so many endearing things about the book that warmed my heart. I really liked the characters in the story, especially the grand children, Camille and pastor Nahum Hardina. The characters appeared so real. It felt like I have known them all of my life. They are the type of people you would not mind being close friends with.

The magic of this well-written book takes the reader to East Goodland, a place where life has gone berserk and the main character Gus must find a plausible solution to all the unexplained mayhem.

The trouble begins with a rogue tornado that takes place during Sunday morning service. The tornado wreaks havoc on the town's cemetery, exposing the body of a man. Much to the dismay of Gus LeGarde, instead of savoring quiet time with his family, he has no other choice but to help find solutions to all the strange happenings. The problems keep coming one after another.

The author does a great job keeping the reader in total suspense; when you think a problem has been resolved; here comes another one that will keep the reader turning the page until the very end of the story.

If you are looking for a story that will keep the adrenaline running non-stop, I highly recommend you picking up a copy of FireSong.
