The history of this small town and its inhabitants is magical and moving. The relationships are constructed very well, with a depth and fullness that makes the story one that will remain long after the final page is read. There is a very special attachment that the reader finds when he or she reads a Lazar story. The closest I can find to describe it is true family and an association that lives inspite of it being only a literary reality with created characters and written happenings.
I personally have read all three of Mr. Lazar's series and have loved each one immensely. If you are a lover of a good story that keeps you guessing with many twists and turns and yet has a real life feel, any of Mr. Lazar's stories are for you.
The story's synopsis promised an interesting mystery with colorful characters, and that's exactly what it delivered.
A professor of music at a local University, Gus LeGarde is looking forward to his summer sabbatical -- to long, lazy days spent tending his vegetable garden and spending time with his grandchildren. But when a tornado tears through the valley one quiet Sunday morning and unearths the remains of missing townsperson, Colin Springer, Gus' plans for a relaxing summer begin to unravel.
Little does Gus know that the tornado is only the first of many strange occurrences that will plague the small town of East Goodland over the next few weeks. As controversy over the reopening of the nearby salt mine heats up, the local pastor finds himself the target of a dangerous criminal's wrath. One humid summer night, the pastor's car crashes into a tree in front of Gus' house. The pastor is taken to the hospital, his blood stream full of heroin.
While Gus works with the local police to try and sort through the chaos, his wife, Camille, discovers a secret room in their century-old farmhouse-- a discovery which leads her to believe the home's original owner, Mary Hill, may have had connections to the Underground Railroad.Read more ›
The story kept me under a spell I could not put it down until I finished reading it.
There are so many endearing things about the book that warmed my heart. I really liked the characters in the story, especially the grand children, Camille and pastor Nahum Hardina. The characters appeared so real. It felt like I have known them all of my life. They are the type of people you would not mind being close friends with.
The magic of this well-written book takes the reader to East Goodland, a place where life has gone berserk and the main character Gus must find a plausible solution to all the unexplained mayhem.
The trouble begins with a rogue tornado that takes place during Sunday morning service. The tornado wreaks havoc on the town's cemetery, exposing the body of a man. Much to the dismay of Gus LeGarde, instead of savoring quiet time with his family, he has no other choice but to help find solutions to all the strange happenings. The problems keep coming one after another.
The author does a great job keeping the reader in total suspense; when you think a problem has been resolved; here comes another one that will keep the reader turning the page until the very end of the story.
If you are looking for a story that will keep the adrenaline running non-stop, I highly recommend you picking up a copy of FireSong.
