It gains much of its reader interest from the continuous threads of conflict which play out in a complex and unusual world where people openly carry powers of one sort or another. At first, the main character is defined largely by her need to control her supranormal abilities but as the action develops, she also has to face emotional interaction with other humans. The fine handling of this theme is a particular strength of the narrative.
The characters are well-rounded and strong, but in general the novel creates the impression of being over-populated. Where there is an abundance of characters, the unfolding of the storyline can become unclear. Where too much detail is offered, the pace can become slow. To a certain extent, that happens in "Fire’s Song".
With Fantasy writing, the world in which the action takes place must be completely believable. It must be the place that suits this particular series of events. Readers should be able to immerse themselves in it.
J.E. Mueller has built such a world. Created by the author’s fine descriptive ability, it is one of the major attractions of this novel. Although, certain references to 21st-century issues and the infrequent use of recognisably 21st-century idioms may cause some readers to stop and think, they do not become a serious distraction.
By any standards, "Fire’s Song" is a book calling for serious attention. It fulfils all the conditions of good Fantasy writing and presents a very satisfactory reading experience.
I finished this book in one sitting. Fast paced and lots of twists and turns. I found this a unique take on including demons in fantasy and loved the strong heroine. Packed with danger and adventure, I was biting my nails as she tried to overcome her curse.
Can’t wait to read more from this author!
Key is strong and determined, even if she doesn't always realize it. Lee holds a special place in my heart as the kind of person I want to push into a tree for smiling too much. I love him. Perfect cinnamon roll 11/10
Once I started reading I couldn't put it down! It has every element a good book should have and I will definitely be reading more from JE Mueller!
