This little box has no aes ni capabilities.
History: I do occasional work out of the house as well as some software testing. Plus, two gamer kids who are on 7 days a week. As a result I have several subnets set up for separation. I've run pfSense before on some home-grown boxes. Recently I had been running several ASUS RT-series AP/routers and some commercial-grade switches but felt that left a lot of features lacking (not to mention hardware overkill for a home install).
I'm running three separate subnets behind the firewall and it's great to see pfSense handle it. As far as processing power, I've run several speed tests and compared to what it was before throughput is not any slower. I haven't tried loading anything too taxing on the box yet, i.e. Maltego or Snort. The plan is to run those on a separate box behind this one with a large storage drive but I may give it a whirl just to see what that does. I have a pfSense gold membership, so I did configure the automatic backups.
The box does not have a fan (the case is its own heatsink) and it does run a bit warm. But the processing power is more than enough for my installation. It comes with a separate power supply, but the power draw is minimal (50w) so I'm pleased to be able to run this on a smaller box that still seems to handle it.
DD-WRT on a WZR-1750dhp wasn't quite cutting it. It doesn't support hardware NAT, so I wasn't able to get my full speeds, and setting up a port to route specific traffic to required a lot of ugly custom scripting. Even though it did work, I'd have to reboot it weekly as performance would gradually drop.
PFSense makes what I was trying to do with DD-WRT effortless. Just assign OPT1 to the private interface, and give it the routing instructions in the web interface. Done. I had used PFSense before but I always had to build a PC to do it, and that's just something I didn't want in my home office. This box is exactly what I needed - full PFSense features, but in a small, quiet box.
The performance blows DD-WRT away. I didn't realize how much my old setup was impacting even simple web browsing. Everything is flying fast and smooth on this box.
I did have a problem with the first one I ordered - it crashed and died with a very colorful display on the video output within the first 24 hours and wouldn't power up after that. Hardware failures do happen, but because I needed the replacement right away, I just ordered another one via Amazon Prime and returned the broken one. The replacement has been working flawlessly for over a month.
