I have been a Brandi fan since her first album. I will not echo what many others have said about the soulfulness of her voice and the almost magical harmonies her the the Twins create. I bought this album after I saw her love show in Raleigh. I am so glad I dis this, for now every time I hear The Eye, Things I Regret and Stranger At My Door I can reminisce of that evening. If you have never gotten to see Brandi live, please do so. Like others, it was nice to see Brandi and The Twins tear it up a little more than their usual, yet there are still of Brandi's beautiful heart tugging ballads. In case no one else has said, the final song on the album, Murder In the City is actually a cover. The initial Artists are The Avett Brother from their The Second Gleam album. She opened for Avett brothers a few years ago...and that was a concert I will never forget. Back to task though, when I listen to Things I Regret not only does my accelerator seem to get heavier, I think back to Dying Day. I will continue to but everything she and The Twins create, for I still get a chill down my spine when I her her beautiful voice. The sound of her voice in Stranger at My Door, that gravely sound brought me back to the rawness of her first album.
There are some who say that her albums and recordings are not as good as the first. The best answer I can give comes from Brandi herself, "You have your whole life to write your first album, but only a year to write the second."

I continue to be utterly amazed by Brandi Carlile. I know it sounds cliché, but she just gets better and better. In my opinion, this is her best, most mature work yet. I thought "Bear Creek," her most recent album before this was a stunner. I actually thought it just can't get better than this. Well, I am happy to say that I was wrong. There are no obscure or "filler" tracks on this album. Each is a gem in its own right and each is uniquely Brandi Carlile. I admit to favoring the title track at the moment, but as this album rotates through my most recent playlist, others are beginning to grab their own special place.
Speaking of special places, I believe that Ms Carlile writes from her own special place. She is a keen observer of our culture, yet manages to put her wisdom into language that sounds like she is a much older observer than she is. She is, as they say, "an old soul."
I give this my highest recommendation. It is a thrill to be able to watch and hear this great artist become even greater.

My wife and I listened to this in the car, on a long trip. I held the lyrics and liner notes to double check the words as we listened. Tears were shed. The lyrics from this dynamic songwriting trio always reach deeper than they first appear, a portrait of the emotional reality of a life lived out on the rough edges, there's more to hear on the second listen through. Their musicianship is excellent, if a little fractured in style; they have not committed to playing in a single genre, but Brandi Carlile's haunting and powerful vocals, and tasteful and effective backup vocals from "The Twins", ties everything they do together. This self-produced effort is artfully done, yet stays within itself enough to highlight the poetry in the words. This group is a songwriting powerhouse, and The Firewatcher's Daughter is an excellent showcase of these three awesome talents at their cohesive best.

Eclectic and Raw Energy

Brandi Carlile blends a mix of new and old in The Firewatcher’s Daughter. New – the album contains a collection of 12 eclectic songs that completely show Carlile and Phil and Tim Hanseroth’s unadultered musicianship and production that listeners have come accustomed to hear. And for this album, it sounds like the band did a good job to capture the intimacy of playing together.

The Firewatcher’s Daughter was produced on the ATCO Records label, a departure from the band’s four previous albums, which were carried on the Columbia Records. In spite of that noticeable change, the music speaks for itself. In a world of music that possess somewhat overproduced songs, the band remains true to their roots and this album clearly shows the raw and powerful instrumentation and unique vocal style of all three members of the band, guitar, bass, vocals, hand claps, and percussions. As one listens to each song, Carlile and company may have picked up where they left on Give Up the Ghost with the track “Dying Day.” A few of the songs have that style of Americana and more. From the opening track “Wherever is Your Heart,” to the proceeding ones, the extremely most rock-driven and kick the dirt type of song on the record “Mainstream Kid,” two rockers the cowbell makes an appearance on “Blood Muscle Skin Bone” and “Alibi” hearken to sixties-garage pop that may have showed up on the Nuggets collection. Aside those elements of the album, there are the touching and heartfelt songs that play with immense maturity than previously heard on her first two studio albums. One may hear a bit of regret and bitterness in the lyrics, but for songs such as “The Eye,” “Beginning to Feel the Years,” and especially “Heroes and Songs” show she has closed a chapter of the past with so-called skeletons in maybe her closet.

And after listening to all of the songs and reading the liner notes of the album, one can say that the band has a knack of producing down-home sounds that is all in the music and the family.
