I chose to read this book after seeing the movie, Hunter Killer . The book, as always, is more detailed than the movie. But I was not quite ready for the stock market scenario of the Russian inflitrators along with some greedy corporate types. My favorite parts were the sub captains battling it out and playing cat and mouse. The Navy Seals were great characters - great side story of how they attempt to save the Russian President and how Captain Glasser was able to get his operatives back safely before he had to make a final life or death decision. I recommend this book along with the movie. A nice weekend diversion .

Written in 2012 this is needlessly wordy with tech talk that while it may engage a former submariner it lulls the casual listener to sleep. A new Russian sub is launched and is struck by sabotage, an American sub aspires to rescue and is struck by a TORPEDO!
Turns out that Russian Cossacks want to return to greatness that they never had SO they have built a small fleet of submarines despite being destitute. They then blow up a couple of their own ships and blame that on the United States! When Putin gets kidnapped (NO!) Obama wants S.E.A.L.s that are in country to check the sub pen to RESCUE PUTIN! (NO!)
MEANWHILE BACK AT THE RANCH! OTHER RUSSIANS have created a RUSSIAN HACKING SYSTEM INTO THE NYSE to disrupt the world economy! LAME PATHETIC LUMBERING THING! UGG! Swearing. Could only take in small bits due its banality!

This tale of a near world-wide calamity is exciting. There is enough plausibility to keep the attention of even an old Cold War submariner. I was reminded of the excitement and intricate plot lines of Clancy’s “Red Storm Rising.”

I bought this after seeing the movie based on it (i.e. Hunter Killer), which I had enjoyed. The book did not disappoint, and was heart-poundingly engaging (even though I had a rough idea of how it all worked out). Given the authors' background, it was no surprise that the submarine warfare came across as very authentic. If I were to nit-pick, some of the financial plotline felt a bit contrived (would the head of the SEC really be allowed into to a high-level defence meeting at the White House?), but it didn't detract from my basic enjoyment of a a great thriller.

The book was ok, but I enjoyed the movie ("Hunter/Killer") much better. The book was essentially "split" between two stories: (1), All that stupid stuff dealing with the Russian "manipulation" of the stock market (Booooring..!!), and (2), the interaction between the State Dept, the Seals, and the crew of the sub. Yes, I saw the movie first. I thought the acting and the performances of the actors & and actresses were pretty much first rate. The book? It sucked - big time! Don't waste your time on that one!!

These 700 pages written in 2012 portray some nasty Russian Mafiosas hacking into the NY stock market instead of the 2016 election. That could not happen, right? The submarine and SEAL chapters do form the basis for the action movie Hunter Killer which all high school and college kids should watch. They can learn that bad people with nuclear toys can end the world! The lessons in Navy technology are great for amateurs like me.Read the book to also see that some greedy Americans will sell out their souls and your life for riches.Definitely worth the time to read!

Wallace and Keith tell a great story. Like their other sub books, this one has a strong cast of men who drive submarines. They, rather than the machinery, are the players in a story that goes well beyond naval operations. Unlike their Hunter Killer series, there are important civilian story lines that add interest. Excellent read or listen. Recommend

It's an OK "techno" thriller in the tradition of Tom Clancy. However, I don't like the filler plot line that has nothing to do with sub marine warfare. I got bored half way through and went on to other books. Will probably come back. However, the submarine action sequences read well and appear to be technically (to my hobbyist understating correct).

I bought this after seeing that it was the book that the film 'Hunter Killer' is based on. I'm pleased to say that the book is infinitely better than the film in that is has multiple converging story lines to keep the reader interested and engaged.

Good Plot, well paced.
A bit of an overstretch with America & Russia navies !
But, makes good reading for those with this interest.

Predictable, shallow, linear. Not even engaging enough for a lazy, holiday read.
