Firing Line with William F. Buckley Jr. "What Is There to Learn from the Killing of Dr. Tarnower?"
Taped on December 3, 1981.
The elegant Mrs. Trilling writing about a murder case? Well, this was a particularly rich murder case in terms of its resonances in our society, and she and Mr. Buckley explore them in absorbing detail. Trilling: "How did I come to my judgment, my very unfavorable feeling about Dr. Tarnower? It started with something that we're not supposed to say: I didn't like his face." Buckley: "His 'slithery face,' your words." Trilling: "Yes, I said he looked like a reptile... We all judge by looks all the time, but we're not supposed to say so. It's just one of our minor hypocrisies."
