If you love history (especially about the South) you will really enjoy this book. The author, Elizabeth Alphin Mundie, describes how the Civil War affected the people in Middle Tennessee, namely Maury County, through the voice of Ellen, a young woman who is about to be married just before the War begins. The story revolves around the lives of Ellen and Kathleen and their families and of Sara, one of their father's slaves, who takes care of the two sisters.

This novel was hard for me to put down because the author makes the characters so real;I felt like I really knew Ellen and her husband John and all the hardships they had to go through. I was sorry when I finished the book because I had become so attached to the characters. Fortunately, there are two more books in this series:I can't wait to see what happens! I just loved this book!

Really enjoyed the extensive description included as well as dialogue. Was especially intrigued by middle Tennessee setting in Maury County as I have been doing genealogy research on an adjacent county. The book came alive for me with each page. My only problem was that I wanted to know what happened to the family and other characters in later life. Keep publishing!

I truly enjoy historic writing but it seemed this book took forever to make its points. Just didn't enjoy this book.

Ms Mundie has a well researched and well written tale that brings Middle Tennessee alive during the most challenging era of American history. The book brings you into the struggle that all faced between loyalty to friends, family and community and the logical playing out of the christian faith that no man can own another soul. The narrative descriptions are fresh and vivid. The suffering brought by war is keenly felt without being sentimental. Even though the story focuses on the sisters in the tale it captured the imagination of this Yankee male. Most enjoyable.
