Where does carbon monoxide come from?
Carbon monoxide, an invisible, odorless gas, is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until it's too late. Because you can't see, taste, or smell it, CO can kill you before you even know it's there. Likewise, exposure to low levels over time can make you ill.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that every home have at least one carbon monoxide alarm with an audible warning signal--like the CO605--installed near sleeping areas. An alarm like the CO605 can detect the CO you can't see, smell, or taste before it causes any physical harm to you or your family.
Electrochemical Technology for Accuracy and Longer Life
The CO605 uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor--the most accurate CO sensor available. In comparison to more commonly available technologies, electrochemical technology is highly accurate, requires a lower amount of power, and boasts a longer life. If the CO605's sensor detects a high concentration of CO, the unit will sound a clear, loud, 85-decibel alarm, giving you a chance to either ventilate the area or safely evacuate.
A/C Power with Battery Backup and User-Friendly Design
This unit runs on A/C power, but in case of an electrical outage, it will switch to battery operation. This gives you peace of mind during storms--when you're more likely to use generators that could potentially give off dangerous levels of CO.
For added convenience, installation is a snap. Simply plug the CO605 into any wall outlet--with no additional mounting--and it's ready to go. The unit features two 'AA' batteries to provide backup power to the monitor in the case of power disruption or outage.
Operation is equally trouble free. One button clearly labeled "Test/Silence" lets you test the unit to see if it's running properly or silence it during a false alarm.
Continually Monitors Both CO Levels and Battery Power
To give you real peace of mind, the CO605 continually monitors CO and re-alarms if dangerous levels persist. At the same time, a low-battery signal let's you know when it's time to replace the backup batteries (included); a low-battery mute quiets the signal for up to eight hours. An easy, front-open compartment allows for easy battery changes without dismounting the alarm, and an end-of-life chirp lets you know when it's time to replace the unit.
The CO605 comes with two 'AA' batteries and a five-year limited warranty. It also comes complete with an "Alarm Action" chart that instructs you on what to do if the alarm sounds.

I got these two days ago and they alarmed the first night. I opened the windows and deduced that it was probably my tankless water heater which was recently installed and failed inspection. It is scheduled to be brought up to code this week.
To prove my theory I made sure the central heat was off for a day and we hadn't used the clothes dryer for a few days and I put one of these detectors in the laundry room where the tankless water heater is installed. We have one of those large jacuzzi style baths in the master bathroom (hence the need to have the tankless) and we took a bath last night. When we were done the alarm was going off. I had done some minimal research before doing this test and knew that too high of a level (12,800 ppm) can kill you instantly after just 2 or 3 breaths. I had read that 400+ can be lethal. Wikipedia states 800 ppm will cause dizziness, nausea, and convulsions within 45 min and you will be insensible within 2 hours and 1600 ppm can kill you in 2 hours. So I went downstairs to see what the reading was.
I held my breath and went in. 875ppm is what it read. I called 911 and the firemen came.
My wife, 2 year old, and 2 month old were upstairs and in a room with the windows wide open. They came in and took their readings. They said they are not allowed to work in an environment where the levels are above 30 ppm without respirators. The windows had been open for 15 minutes and they were still getting readings over 70.
Later, we compared what their professional monitor said to what the my 2nd First Alert Carbon monoxide detector was reading (remember I bought two of these). Their reading matched exactly what this unit displayed. So you can trust these devices.
Please trust your device. Thats what you bought it for. Call 911. Open windows or get out of there. The long term affects of Carbon Monoxide exposure can cause heart problems, learning disabilities, and many other terrible things. I am now worried about what this has been doing to my family over the last 4 months since the water heater was installed. Like I said I have a 2 month old....
I have posted a picture of the unit reading the max value from last night.
of thunder we were awake to check on the kids anyways and instantly smelled the fire and got out within minutes of the strike. The fire chief said that when they had got there, the only detector that was going off was this one. Moments later the smoke detectors (that also have the built in carbon monoxide detectors) went off about 10 min later. Carbon monoxide is a heavy gas and you need a floor level detector that will catch the gas. By the time it reaches the ceiling detectors, it's too late. According to the fire chief, this detector is what would've saved our lives. (And I have to admit, I was nervous since this is such a cheaply priced detector, but after today's experience, I'm buying these for everyone I know!)
Had alarms for about two months with no issues. Then suddenly one night bout 1:30 am the alarm in my daughters room began going off. Per instructions on back of alarm states 4 beeps = CO2 present. Unplugged alarm and swapped with other alarm in kitchen. About an hour later alarm in daughters room started going off again four beeps. Called fire department responded with CO2 meter. Located high levels of CO2 coming from water heater area in my daughters closet. Ended up the vent under house was plugged up with mouse nest and needed to be cleaned out. Haven't had an issue since.
With all that said I thank God I brought these alarms. Wouldn't of had no idea of presence of CO2 and who knows may have never woken up the next morning.
If it is going off (4 beeps) trust it!! You never know.
I don't normally right a lot of reviews but I definently took the time to right this one it deserves it and may have saved me and my families lives.
If you don't have any CO2 alarms in your house and are thinking about getting some, stop thinking about it and buy them now!
