Product Description
Combining premium smoke detection with a sleek, compact design, the First Alert P1010 Atom Photoelectric Smoke Alarm with 10-Year Battery uses an ultra-reliable photoelectric sensor to detect smoke from smoldering fires while keeping false alarms to a minimum. A built-in 10-year 3V lithium-ion battery provides continuous power with no need to ever worry about changing batteries for the lifetime of the alarm. It's manufactured using 52% less resin and 76% less plastic than a standard alarm. The easy mounting system allows you to effortlessly install the detector on a wall or ceiling. A loud 85-decibel siren sounds if smoke is detected, a convenient test/silence button lets you easily check alarm function and mute false alarms, and an end-of-life signal lets you know when it's time to replace the unit.

Old Review, for reference, I was completely wrong: This alarm seemed great at first because it didn't seem to give false alarms from our cooking. But I got suspicious and tried to test it to make sure it would go off if a fire started. I ran the test program and the alarm beeps well, scares the cat, everything seems fine. But then I held it to a candle, a match, open oven, gas burners, nothing set it off. So I have zero confidence this will actually alert me of any fires. I would change my review if I hear of a better, proper way to test these, until then I'm very skeptical and will be attempting to get my money back.

We have had these go off in the kitchen when something like a tortilla or a piece of bread got a little too toasty -- enough to emit a lot of smoke. I've had some of these installed from prior purchases for more that two or three years now and the battery has not failed yet. I have a calendar entry set up in my Google calendar to remind me to replace them after 10 years. They're a great buy and get you additional peace of mind, and are a great gift to give to college students or others who are moving into their own dorm or apartment for the first time.
Original review
I have no idea what I got. It doesn't beep, pause, beep, pause when I push the test button as the manual says and it looks different than the picture but it appears to be working. The light flashes every minute (I never knew how difficult it is to stand and stare at something for just a minute) so...
If I have a fire and it does the deed, I'll update this review. If I have a fire and it doesn't go off, I'll update the review if I survive. If I have a fire and it sounds with a continuous alarm rather than the T3 it claims to use, I'll update whether I'm rendered deaf or not.
