Samantha Cray lost her mom when she was two years old and her fire-fighter father when she was fifteen. Then she lost her best friend the year she left high school.

Lost and lonely and on the brink of self destruction, Samantha goes to London at the invitation of her guardian, Uncle Cort. It's here that Samantha learns the secret of her bloodline.

Samantha is now known as Ann and is set to become the Wielder, which is a power dedicated to the Circle of Light, which fights the Dark in its various forms.

Ann's best friend Fran visits her in London and as well as becoming Ann's lover, finds herself embroiled in the Circle with Ann.

Ann is on a mission to learn all she can, as quickly as she can. The Dark is fast catching up and will soon overpower her and harm her friends.

This is another book in the Wielder series. The story hasn't always been easy to follow in previous books. This book actually explains a lot that has puzzled some readers who have read JD's previous books in this series, as to what the Circle of Light and the Wielder is. Also how Samantha/Ann became a Wielder and part of the Circle of Light as previously written about in Glass Lions and Punk and Zen Part 1: The ReMix.

As is usual with a JD Glass book, it's well written and the characters are all multidimensional. Both Ann and Fran are great people and easy to get to know and like. The secondary characters, especially Uncle Cort, Elizabeth and Graham, all enhance and progress the story forward, each playing their own roles to perfection.

This is a story of being lost and of finding ones way back from the brink of destruction. It's an incredible journey for Ann and her friends. A journey full of twists and turns and surprises along the way.

A book that combines the angst of young adulthood with the pursuit of transcendent justice, First Blood is an intense read.
Glass writes characters who are never dull, and always passionate about whatever they are doing whether it is learning ancient rituals or new sexual tricks--and in this story, the two are, more often than not, combined, making both that much more compelling to the reader.
While the main characters are learning all kinds of mystical secrets and training to defend the forces of life in the universe, they are also busy being teenagers and falling in love. Sam plays her guitar (and her bass), Fran comes to terms with her conservative, homophobic parents. These more human elements make the characters people a reader can relate to in spite of their larger-than-life heroic goals.
First Blood will certainly appeal to lovers of paranormal urban fantasy. But it is based on religious and mystical traditions that are practiced by many people in real life as well. It will undoubtedly appeal especially to those!

This book lives, breathes, and flows through the many domains of existence via their frequency and vibration. I adore this kind of esoterica, the life and teachings of the Kybalion. There is also an intense love affair which astoundingly is quite helpful in discharging the extra energy that is connected with the heightened dynamic states that are associated with the profound learning and requisite élan vital that are experienced during the training period. Additionally both lovers are being prepared for two established and special ceremonies that are very ancient and immensely important. I felt as if I were right in the middle of everything that was happening which was extraordinarily satisfying. I was transported into a world I have only dreamt existed. If you have sensed there is an ageless wisdom that is associated with a focused power and linked to the maintenance of the Light that fights the dark in all its manifest forms, then this book is definitely for you!

Samantha Joan Cray, now known as Ann, is the next in line to ascend to an important position within the Inner Circle of the Light. She lost her mother at a young age and her father died supposedly in the line of duty as a firefighter. However, she is a talented musician, a totally passionate and unwavering lover, and committed to learn, excel, and master all that is required of her by virtue of her bloodline. It will be a long and arduous process, which I thoroughly enjoyed with her every step along the way. Fantastic!

Francesca, generally called Fran, knew Samantha in high school and was Ann's first lover. She is now her true lover and they do engage in some deliciously tempestuous, intimate, sexual lovemaking. Fran is also tutored and prepared for the important ceremonies she will be involved in.

When she comes round her uncle begins to reveal that she is not an ordinary pre-college girl, that she has a destiny and an important role to play as a Guardian of the Light. So begins Ann’s awakening as a Wielder. Her training is tough, absorbing and dangerous, but she must master the power she holds and understand the plains she now inhabits.

When her best friend and first girlfriend Fran arrives to stay for the autumn they quickly re-forge their friendship and their physical connection. Fran’s choice is to stand with Sam/Ann and join the Light, despite the very real threats to everyone who is associated with the emerging Wielder.

Sam/Ann and Fran must step into their roles fast, as the Darkness is closing in on the circle and a new threat can be felt. At the same time they must face hard decisions about their future together.

<Note from the Author - This version is based on American Goth and has been re-written extensively.>

First-up let me say that Paranormal isn’t a genre I have done much reading in. I have read a few over the years starting back with a gf who was a Stephen King addict, and then some crossover fantasy stories and ending up with a few romance/paranormal in the LesFic world. So this was a departure for me. One I am very glad I took.

I really enjoyed JD’s writing.
