About the Author

Mary Hoffman has written more than 70 books for children, and her powers of observation bring vitality and humor to all her stories and retellings. Her titles for DK include Henry's Baby and A First Bible Story Book. Her best-known picture books are Amazing Grace, Three Wise Women, and An Angel Just Like Me. Mary lives in Oxfordshire with her husband, and they have three daughters. The girls were brought up on myths and legends, of which Mary and her husband have an extensive collection.Julie Downing has illustrated more than 45 picture books, including The Firekeeper's Son, No Hugs Till Saturday, Lotus and Feather, and First Mothers. She has a degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, and she teaches watercolor and children's book illustration at the Academy of Art University. Downing's art has been featured in galleries throughout England and the United States, as well as in the Society of Illustrator's Original Art Show in New York City. She has won many awards, including the New York Public Library Best Books Award and a Parents' Choice Award.

Mary Hoffman is the UK author of well over a hundred published books, mainly for children and teenagers. Recently she has written two adult novels under the pseudonyms Kate Snow and Amy Lovell.

She is well known for picture books like Amazing Grace and its sequels and the YA sequence Stravaganza as well as historical fiction like The Falconer's Knot and information book like The Great Big Book of Families.

She has won a few prizes and her books have been translated into 30 languages. She lives in a converted barn near Oxford and has three grown-up daughters all working in the arts.

My 4yo daughter is obsessed with this book. She got it for Christmas when she was 3, and sat down and listened to the whole thing in one sitting. We lost it at some point, and I bought a new copy, and she constantly asked if it had arrived yet. As soon as it did, we sat down and read it all again. She brings it with her and "reads" the stories in the car, in quite dramatic fashion. The pictures are great. She likes that the table of contents has good pictures of the stories, so she can look at it and pick which one she wants to hear, and is even getting to the point in number recognition that she can find the right page.

Of course they are fairytales, and all the instant love and happily-ever-after that comes with them. I sometimes add edits on the spot ("And after they had many conversations during which they realized how compatible they were, and found they shared many core values, they decided to get married!"). But still, it is a great first book of a fairytales, with a good variety of tales and clear telling of them. I recommend!

My oldest daughter was intersted in fairy tales, but the scarier aspects of them seemed to stick with her for hours -- they were not appropriate bed time stories. The stories and pictures in this book, while still staying true to the original story, are not as threatening or frightening. It truly is a good "First Book of Fairy Tales," as the title states.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It's what I wanted in terms of a collection of fairy tales for young kids. Each story is only a few pages and is just a basic summary of the story. It's a good introduction to the stories although I question the word choices - the stories are short but the language is a little sophisticated for young children. My three year old daughter loves it, but I don't think she understands the stories very well. These are not the Disney versions of the stories and won't be appealing to most "modern" parents. I like stories with positive messages and while you can often find fable like "lessons" in these stories, the women are almost universally either sweet/"good natured" = good or just outright evil. I get this is how the stories were written in ye olden times, but I'd expect a current book to have updated the framing of these stories at least. Not sure I'll be keeping this one for long.

I grew up listening to my parents read me fairy tales and this collection really covers some of the greats. Sure, they're very short and missing a lot of the complex details that really make people connect to them, but the story lines are still the same. This collection is a great way to introduce very young children to fairy tales without boring them or frightening them. This book is for the beginning reader, not for a child that has been able to read for quite some time. I cannot wait for the little princess to grow up so she can read these to her mother and brothers.

Got this for my 3 year old daughter, it arrived and looked ok on first sight, but when I read this to her at bedtime the stories are really short one of them is only 2 pages long and is just pure rubbish. The stories are written in an old fashioned way with them making no sense at all to my daughter I'm having to replace old fashioned sayings with modern variations for her to understand the stories plus the illustrations are quite creepy and my daughter was scared of a few of them. I ended up shelving this book permanently and bought her 365 bedtime stories and rhymes published by paragon, it's a wonderful book with really nice illustrations it's written in modern English BUT it's American English so some words are spelt differently compared to UK English literature. It cost me £2 more and was worth every penny I've included and image in case your interested in buying that instead of this rubbish.

The selection of stories is a mix between the elementary and the obscure. My three year old daughter has been read many of the fairytales in individual books for the last couple of years, so she is familiar with the popular tales. Perhaps children who already possess stories such as the princess and the pea, sleeping beauty and beauty and the beast would find this a little samey. There are, however, some tales I’ve never heard of so will be interesting to introduce these to my family in bedtimes to come.
