4.0 out of 5 starsA Touching Story of Teenage Years
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 28, 2012
First, this review may contain spoilers.
I read this story from a point of view that probably wasn't the author's intention. I thought it was a loving yet satirical look at teenage years, the emotional cravings over boys and girls who in later years seem so ordinary. Because both the boys in this story are somewhat undesirable: Derek is a flake and Ben a self-absorbed tool who flirts with girls and leads them on for the sheer joy of it. Yet although it's written from a teenage girl's point of view, who can't relate to those years, when feelings ruled, we desperately wanted to be noticed by the opposite sex and did all kinds of goofy things for it. That wasn't the time for deep character analysis! The author conveys that sense very beautifully. As well as some family dynamics that happens during that period of our life. But in the end in my opinion the valued kiss is really ephemeral and empty and that's where the satire comes in. Although the author may be hinting at a happily-ever-after romance, I don't know, but that's OK, readers see different things in the same story, right?

1.0 out of 5 starsI would not recommend. i did put a LOT of spoilers.

A friend of mine told me about this book. Figured I would give it a try. I normally read YA paranormal romance novels.
I only had enough patients to read the first (8 chapter) short story in the book. It’s called First date.
I read this on my phone through the kindle app.
To start this review I would like to say in my opinion this story has potential.
Spoiler alert

This story starts off in a bar setting. This girl Alice is there with her sister and her sisters BF, but sits at the bar alone. OK!
A guy comes up asks to buy her a drink no big deal right. Wrong she looks to make sure he is talking to her then comes out and asks him if he is talking to her. Hello she just looked around and saw no one in the area. Why is she surprised her sister isn't watching her? Her sis is with her BF after all. They get there drinks he asks her to a Christmas ball. They all have leant on something.
She goes back to sis. Sis noticed that she was talking to Derek but doesn't seem concerned so why was Alice worried?
Spell check could come in handy next time.
She gets up early to swim and the only person mentioned as being there is her friend Ben, until the end of swimming practice and 2 girls are there and Ben vanishes.
I thought this part is funny. She just finds out that she is a stopgap for him from Katy who says that he just broke up with Jessica (And how she is happy because Jessica was annoying) and she has made many comments about how this is the first time she has been asked out but now at location 166 she says “she was a stopgap, they would probably become friends. She had been played that card a lot of times.” How could she have played that card a lot if this was the first guy to show interest?
“One day she would leave her nails alone, one day.”
“To tempt passing trade”
She was shy when Derek came up to the bar and yet she says that she has never been shy or embarrassed before when he runs to catch up to her in town.
A week later starts chapter 3 Christmas day. “Burgundy dress fitted at the bodice and then loose up to the knee.” Shouldn’t it be down to the knee when your describing a dress top to bottom?
Derek shows up and she is thinking he could be her prince?
In the bathroom at the dance she over hears 2 girls talking about how Lucy just broke up with Derek for being annoying. Wait I though he broke up with Jessica. Who is Lucy?
She runs into Ben as she leaves the rest room and we find out she has a crush on him for as long as she can remember. That would have been nice to know in the beginning when he was first introduced.
Derek and Alice dance talk she asks to go home around midnight he stops at a church she fights this feeling to pray while thinking she used to be religious but isn't any longer, Then thinks thank you god as they walk out.
Derek uses his manors, opens doors, and seems very polite but lets her walk herself to the door after kissing her cheek in the car, Never getting out himself.
Good thing he stays in the car though, because the story ends with her getting up to the apartment that she lives in to find Ben lying on the floor in front of her door. They make out he leant his head on hers then they make out some more.
leant should have been looked up by the author. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/leant just in case your interested i looked it up.

FIRST DATE

Love & Regrets
Written by Vanessa Wester

Reviewed by Author Roy Murry

I remember my first date with the most beautiful redhead I have ever met and dated up to and including our High School Prom. Later in college, she found her soul mate and married him, while I was fighting a war in Vietnam.

Vanessa’s FIRST DATE brought back memories of my first date and it will for you. The book is two romantic short stories in one. It is free on Amazon.com today.

Ms. Wester does a fine job of setting you up for what you would think would happen on a first date. The tension is there between the two participants: the holding of the hands for the first time, the opening of the door by the male, and the inquisitive conversation – He cares for me?

Then Vanessa throws in a factor that changes the dynamic of the first date – another man. Only by reading this quick moving love story will you get the answer.

This book of short stories was inspiring. Reading it made me want to find love all over again, even though I have my one true love. There were a few places where I had to stop and think, but I think that was mostly because I'm an American and the author is English. There were some English nuances that I didn't quite get, but it didn't take away from understanding what the author was trying to convey. Over all this is a good, quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quick, Fun Read!
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 16, 2014

"First Date" by Vanessa Wester is composed of three delightful shorts, each approaching love from a different angle. The first reminds us all of how tumultuous young love or "infatuation" can be, never knowing how your heart truly feels until it's forced to decide. The second was my favorite because it threw a bit of otherworldly interest into the mix. I loved the idea of a cupid sent from above to help us out. And the final short reminds us that what once was can never be again. This book was a great way to spend some down time without having to get embroiled in complicated subplots and character analysis. Easy beach or before bed read!

What a wonderful novella of 4 contemporary fiction romantic reads!! ... Each short story is entertaining, keeps you engaged, the pages turning & wanting more :) ... I would recommend this to everyone :) ... Also, new readers & those who are of the 'New adult' (18-25 years of age) genre swill really get a kick out of these typical short stories that reflect situations that could happen, except for the one adorable, sexy Cupid story ;) ... I can't wait to see more & bigger books from this creative author with longer, full length stories & more pages filled with her wonderful imagination!

4.0 out of 5 stars The emotions of youth

This is a touching and innocent story of the expectations and emotional unknowns that confront us all in our youth. When emotions first rule our lives and before everyday life consumes us, pushing innocence aside.

Well written and flowing.

I'm not usually drawn to stories written from the woman/girls point of view, but I found this story engaging and enjoyable. I'm glad I took a chance on this one.

I look forward to more from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple yet sweet story

From the beginning you can tell it's self published. Needs polishing or rather a copy-editor however other than that it's a very cute story and still well worth the read. My wife enjoyed it and would recommend it. The creativeness of the characters make the story worth reading since they are interesting enough to keep your attention in order to keep flipping those electronic pages. I found this searching through the many books on Amazon and the book cover happens to be what caught my attention.

These three short stories were a wonderful treat. They were all light, refreshing and made me smile. What more can you want from a quick escape to a different place? The first story reminded me of that high school crush, the second one was a forbidden love and the third one was about letting an old love go. All three brought back memories of youth, making me appreciate the experience I've gained with age!! Enjoy these short entertaining tales of love, you will be glad you did.
