First Fleet #1-4: The Complete Saga Paperback – September 25, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
With the discovery of faster-than-light travel, humanity has begun its exploration of the galaxy. When a military fleet discovers the ancient ruins of an extinct alien civilization, it is heralded as the first proof of intelligent life away from Earth. However, when a medical regeneration pod accidentally revives alien tissue and awakens something shockingly destructive, the fleet transmits a single terrifying distress call before going silent.
A team of scientists is assembled to find the casualties, including a young entanglement expert who is struggling with the knowledge her sister is one of the missing. As her team gets closer to the horror that is the remains of the fleet, she realizes that some things are better left unfound.
A cosmic horror inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
--------------------------
“Help us. We’ve gone too far...”
When the military’s largest space fleet disappears with a single terrifying transmission, the best and brightest are recruited to find out what happened.
Beka Grales, a young quantum entanglement expert whose only sister was stationed on the missing fleet, struggles along with her team to decipher their only clues: the encrypted memories of the lost soldiers.
Meanwhile across the galaxy, two young twin girls awaken from visions of ghastly souls pleading for help. Night after night the girls are drawn deeper into their dreams as they communicate with these lost beings. As their mother, Cam Dowager, realizes the lost souls are connected to the missing fleet, she works frantically to hide the twins and their knowledge from the increasingly desperate military.
Despite the military’s sole focus on recovering their ships, Beka and Cam begin to realize the horrifying truth…that the Fleet, and the creature that has taken control of it, must never be found again.

About the author

Stephen Case gets paid for teaching people about space, which is pretty much the coolest thing ever. He also occasionally gets paid for writing stories about space (and other things), which have appeared in Beneath Ceaseless Skies, Daily Science Fiction, Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show, Shimmer, and elsewhere. His novel, First Fleet, is a science fiction horror epic (think H. P. Lovecraft meets Battlestar Galactica) published by Axiomatic Publishing and available on Amazon. Stephen holds a PhD in the history and philosophy of science and will talk for inordinate amounts of time about nineteenth-century British astronomy. His first work of nonfiction, Making Stars Physical: the Astronomy of Sir John Herschel, was published in 2018 by the University of Pittsburgh Press. He lives with his wife, four children, and two illegal backyard chickens in an undisclosed suburb of Chicago. Follow him on Twitter @StephenRCase or at www.stephenrcase.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2015I finished all four and even paid for 2-4. The horror vibe grabbed me. A sense of urgency remained throughout, but the horror declined towards the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2021This was a book that piqued my interest when I wanted to read something like the film Event Horizon. I am very glad I found this.
This book is very gripping from beginning to end. The characters are well fleshed out and the ideas presented really shine. I found myself being caught off guard many times while reading this book. I highly recommend it. Just beware, it's more science fiction and less horror.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2016Great futuristic world of space travel. A few too many characters at the beginning, but found a nice pace by the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2015This edition compiles all the smaller pieces released individually over a few months. This edition is the one you should buy because you'll want it all. You need to read the whole story, start to finish. The plot is great and includes some traditional sci-fi elements (AI, faster than light travel) with excellent twists or angles. No spoilers here though. Also the characters are great with awesome female characters that are well developed and front-and-center and driving the plot of the book, kind of a rarity in Sci-Fi/Fantasy when you think about it. Great stuff all around, highly recommend.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2017I'll try to keep this spoiler free, but the plot structure is my major issue with the book. In the beginning, I thought the story was engaging and the writing wasn't getting in the way of the story. There are lots of moving parts and story lines that all come together in the end, as one would expect. That said, the way they come together is extremely clunky. There are *multiple* deus ex machina moments. The book drifts from science fiction in space to "guess what impossible thing is going to be rationalized next". I'm generally pretty forgiving in the free-kindle-book genre, but this one was a disappointment.
To be fair, the plot reads like it was laid out before writing. The plot "twists" were set up so they didn't feel too haphazard or obvious. I felt that the actual twists themselves became absurd. Most/all require the invention of new physics (not new technology, but actual physics) *and* completely ignoring common sense applications of existing technology. It almost came across as "how could I make this solution happen...forget it, I'll just make something up and then add some hints earlier in the text" or "hmm...looks like I need to bestow some superpowers here and call it effects of X". As I tell my students, "because...magic" is not sound justification.
There are many better books out there. This one passed the time on some long flights, but that's about it for me. It's listed as a horror epic, but I never felt any horror, impending doom, or even tingling of unease. It's an easy read and you can put it down and pick it up again without trouble.

Great, fast paced scifi. Do not want to ruin anything but will say that the use of and implementation of FTL in this story is fantastic.
If you like your scifi with a bit of horror thrown in, then you need this in your life.

The sci fi with a horror element gave it a little extra in my opinion.
