Editorial Reviews

Review

"As a football fan, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Jake's behind-the-scenes look at life in the NFL. But even better, I think First and Goal: What Football Taught Me about Never Giving Up will be a helpful devotional for all teens, showing them how to integrate faith and life, and inspiring them to persevere through all of life's challenges."
Josh Kelley, pastor and author of Radically Normal

"As the mother of a high school receiver, I'm thrilled to have found this perfect blend of faith and football targeted to reach the heart of my son. The readings are short enough to keep his attention while still giving him plenty to think about as he heads out the door to practice. Jake Byrne's honesty about his personal struggles balancing life, football, and diabetes give hope to others navigating the rough waters of life. While we can all learn from the lessons Jake shares, First and Goal is the perfect inspiration for teenaged boys like mine."
Candee Fick

"The book is so inspirational to my son who has type 1 diabetes, like Jake. Even for someone without type 1 diabetes, the book is great and the stories are so enjoyable."
Therese Balistrieri

At age 14 Jake was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, he did not let that slow him down, or stop him from pursuing his dreams to play football, all through high school, college and ultimately in the NFL. He shares his triumphs and his struggles in such a heartfelt, real way, that you cannot help but find a nugget in this book to apply to your life as well.

The one thing I noticed is that this book is categorized under Youth Nonfiction, being a mom to 3 boys myself I was thinking how much they would enjoy reading it. But I have to say this book is for anyone facing any type of struggles in their life. It really encouraged me personally. As a football fan, I enjoyed how the book was set up with the different football terms being defined, and then using those examples with life experiences. If you’re not a football fan, you will not get lost in the jargon. What I think I enjoyed most were Jake’s life stories, the fun antics he describes with his siblings and friends. This tells me that he has a full life filled with love from family and friends, but it does not overshadow the love he has for God; that shines through as he encourages his reader to look to God for strength to help them through whatever they struggle with.

I found it so fitting that his mom, Holly Michael’s, contribution is under the Extra Point category. This brief jog down memory lane completes the book in such a way that I now understand why whenever the camera zooms in on any football player on the sidelines, the first thing they say is “Hi Mom.” Because it is the pure love of a mom that strengthened and encouraged him as he worked diligently to get to where he is today.

Great devotional book, I think especially for young adults . . . although I find wisdom in his vignettes, and I am in my 60s. Jake uses his football experiences and artfully melds them into life-lessons, tying both with Scriptural insights. I think this will make a great gift for that young person in your life. Wouldn't be bad for their parents, either.

This was a wonderful book to read. A true page turner I even found myself laughing and crying while reading it.
This would be excellent for both teens and parents of teenagers.
The advise and stories hold great encouragement for families who worry about the struggles that affect a teen with medical problems, but who wants to be an athlete in school/college. And how too not only face them, but conquer them!
With faith in God, themselves and a great family unit anything is possible.
Jake proved in his writing that it's all possible.
Thank you for putting it in a book Jake. I look forward to reading more of your books in the future.
Excellent read.

Jake Byrne dreamed of playing professional football but, at age 14, found out he had type 1 diabetes - determined, he persevered. 'First and Goal', written by Jake and his mother, Holly Michael, is a collection of 90 devotionals. Each titled alphabetically with a football term, and relating a personal experience from his journey to the NFL, enhanced by a related scripture which the reader can apply to his/her own situation, It will appeal to both youth and adults, male and female. I enjoyed reading Jake's story, and was inspired by his courage, determination, and faith. He currently works in Dallas, and has a blog to "educate and encourage others, especially diabetic youth, to be active and achieve goals - regardless of what life throws at them". Following are excerpts from 2 of the devotionals:

TWO MINUTE WARNING (A stop in the game clock, 2 minutes before each half. Normally results in a TV commercial.):
Jake relates his first year of tackle football, as a 3rd grader, and in his awkward chubby stage. Constantly being yelled at because of his mistakes, he hated football - yet his father forced him to complete the season. Just as the 2 minute warning is a time for the team to regroup, he needed 2 years to regroup and decide if he would continue the sport. Two years later, when his friend encouraged him to sign up for youth football because of his size, and knowing all his friends would be playing - he decides to try it again. It was the right decision and time.

When pushing oneself, or being pushed by another, and it doesn't work out - he urges that it not be counted as a failure. "Is there anything that you gave up on because of poor results, thinking you weren't good at it? Have you given it a season of rest? Maybe it's time to try again".

Jake's spiritual maturity shines through in this sport's analogy devotional. Neat that it was written both from his professional knowledge and his personal spiritual journey. I highly recommend the book not only for those who love football but also for those who struggle with challenges.

An incredible and uplifting devotional. First and Goal is geared toward teen boys to show how to overcome adversity. But I enjoyed learning a lot of the terms of football and how he relates them spirituality.
We have three boys each that played football. I would have loved to have had this book as a devotional for them through their teen years. Jake Byrne is truly an inspiration to all. At the age of 14 life as he knew it stopped. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He thought that this would destroy his dream of becoming a high school football player as well as an NFL player. He was determined not to be sidelined and fight. This book shows how God empowered him and was right by his side throughout it all.
I recieved this book from The BookClub Network for an honest review.
