Chira Kelly has had her life turned upside down at home and at school through events beyond her control. She is determined to live her life without needing anyone or anything. Sometimes life has a wicked sense of humor, and this time is no exception. Not only does Chira discover that she does need someone, but that other person quickly and quietly makes himself a permanent part of her life without even asking for her permission. In an unexplained turn of events, an innocent trip to a haunted house will forever alter the lives of those she loves, and only one person can help her make sense of it all. Will she have the courage to dig for the truth, or will she let someone else take on that burden?
My heart went out to Chira. I could easily relate to her and all of her personal problems. I had my own burdens to carry and struggles I had to fight through to get to where I am today. You don't become weak after going through that. In fact, these experiences make you stronger. They mold you and change you into someone who is scarred and weathered by the storms of life. They also leave you with a deep longing to belong and be known. When those possibilities aren't available, you push onward becoming numb to the pain and emptiness. Chira has grown hard by her experiences, but her heart is still desperately longing for the love and acceptance that she has been denied. She is finally ready for someone special to notice her and cherish her.
I was completely blown away by the other characters in this book. Ben is just downright awesome! His mysterious past, and his unique talent is just wow. I haven't read about such an interesting character for a very long time, and I just couldn't get enough. I hope that in the next part of this series we learn even more about him. Tasha is such a good friend to Chira, and I loved her heart. She brought life and joy to Chira when no one else could. She was Chira's heart, and I am anxious to learn more about her.
Pauline Creeden is an amazing author. Her talent is so diverse and rich that I have yet to read anything from her that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. This is definitely no exception to that, and I think it might even be the best story that she written to date. I can't wait to read what's next in this series! The originality and heart in this story reminded me of the writing of Ted Dekker who started and inspired my love of reading.
