I think this would be a great reference book for couples. When you're feeling discouraged in your own marriage, you can dip into it and read about one of the couples. These couples have been amazingly frank with the author about what they've been through. Their stories are so detailed that you really travel the journey with them.
If I could make one suggestion, it would be to weave the key lesson of each story into the fabric of the story more. I think that would help readers "keep their eyes on the prize."
Each couple has a different challenge, so everyone can find something to relate to. And they all have achieved that solid bond that only comes from going through hard times and coming out the other side. This book shows couples that all that work IS worth it.
I really liked the authors variety of couples and how she articulated their experiences. This is fantastic reading material for anyone considering marriage. It should be shared and discussed with a spouse to be.
Each of the twelve couples that we meet through the book are depicted in such a way that you feel that you really get to know them. It feels like I had the opportunity to sit down with them and hear them tell us their life story. I shared their struggles and cheered on their victories.
As we get to know the couples we can learn from their experiences. Not only do we get to see what went wrong in their lives (whether it was a decision that they made or something that happened to them) we then see how they dealt with the outcomes from those struggles. How they picked up the pieces and put them back together in a way that resulted in an even stronger relationship than they had before. (And fortunately they aren't all negative experiences that we get to share in.)
At the end of each chapter Lori Lowe then shows us a specific lesson that we can implement into our own marriages, and then covers them a final time in the last chapter.
No matter what you might experience in your marriage, I am sure that you will connect with the couples in "First Kiss & Lasting Bliss". With Lori as your guide you will learn what to avoid and what to strive toward in your marriage. I can't recommend it enough!
Her writing style is easy and engaging. It feels like you are making new friends as you read about their lives and what they went through to become an even stronger couple.
Then Lowe extracts a lesson from each couple for creating a strong marriage, which she summarizes at the end of the book. There are twelve important lessons brought alive by the generous sharing of each couples' story. This book is truly a gem.
When we received the book we were a little nervous...and then--IMPRESSED.
We both agree the telling of our story is accurate and well presented. Maybe too accurate because when my (LaRita) mother read our story in the book she started to cry. I had to remind her "the story has a happy ending" :)
Each story is unique and really shares the emotions we all face when we feel we "can't take one more thing."
I think this is a great book to share with everyone. It shows both the work and the rewards of long term relationships.
Thank you, MS. Lowe, for telling each story with love and compassion.
