In First Lensman, the second book in the Lensman series, we find the benevolent super beings of Arisia ready to bestow the first "lens" on a human being (which, among other things, will give humans telepathic powers). The honor goes to Virgil Samms, who will ever after be known as the "First Lensman." But it's a title that he'll have to earn by establishing the Galactic Patrol, a group that is at once powerful and incorruptible, and will protect the universe from the evil and almost-unstoppable Eddorians. If that weren't tough enough, Samms must also dodge assassination attempts at home and help his second in command Rod "The Rock" Kinnison win the presidency of North America. And that's just the beginning of his troubles.

That's the good part. The bad part is that publisher of this eBook should be strung up & shot for criminal non-proofreading! There are an average of 1+ mis-spellings, weird punctuations, & etc/page. Since I have read the book in paperback some 45 years ago, I can read through the errors, however, to publish a book direct from OCR & not even perform a simple cleanup of the obvious errors is, sadly, more common than not in the arena of older books.
HEY AMAZON, HOW ABOUT JUMPING DOWN THIS PUBLISHER'S THROAT & GET SOME OF THESE OCR ERRORS FIXED!
Even though I know the stories so well, the typographical errors in this Kindle edition interfere with my enjoyment of the story, and manage to make some passages almost totally intelligible. Especially if you are one of the few readers not acquainted with Doc's work, by all means read the story but look elsewhere for a more readable version.
But Klono's carballoy editing pen, are there a lot of typos in this edition! It's unusual to go a full page without something being mangled -- wrong letters, screwed up punctuation, spaces in the middle of words, you name it and this e-book has it. My paperback copy has the same cover as this edition with none of the typos, so it has to have been mangled during conversion.
Hopefully Amazon will clean this book up at some point. It would be a good intro to the Lensman series if they did.
EDIT: I just got an update notice from Amazon, saying there was a corrected copy of this book waiting for download. They might have corrected _some_ of the typos, but there's still plenty here -- Virgil Samms is still routinely called Virgil Sammy, just for one instance.
