Product Description
Product Description
When a duplicitous scheme by the low-level yakuza, Kase (Shota Sometani) goes hilariously wrong, a terminally ill boxer, Leo (Masataka Kubota), and a disturbed drug addicted call girl, Monica (Sakurako Konishi), find themselves innocently caught in the crosshairs of two warring gangs. Over the course of the increasingly ludicrous night, the two fall passionately in love, while the hail of bullets and blood fall quietly in the background. From prolific auteur Takashi Miike, this noir-tinged, violent yakuza film, is Miike at his most fun and anarchic.

Delightfully inventive! I kept laughing in sheer pleasure at the inventiveness and absurdity of the situations, which were played straight.
One of the my favorite movies of the ones I have seen this year!
Miike is amazing. His drive and creativity is unstoppable. The man has been non stop making videos and films since the early 90's. Every year 2-5 films! I do not know any other director on earth that has done something like this.
As for this movie he does not disappoint. Yakuza, blood, gore, violence with Miike's traditional comical twist. Add in that dash of creative fantasy out of left field to keep you on your toes and we have yet another Miike classic. Heroic adventure with a happy ending. Dramatic story that touches on some pretty heavy issues but it still manages to not take itself too seriously.
After watching this movie I read the novella again, and I can say it's very true to the original. Most of the dialogue is taken straight from Turgenev's masterpiece. The additions to the story don't make sense or are misguided, however, and should have been removed.
The central character of Zinaida is very much how I had pictured her. Dominique Sanda captures her energy and cruelty convincingly. John Moulder-Brown is adequate as the innocent 16-year-old Alexander (Vladimir in the book) who falls hopelessly in love with Zinaida. Nothing spectacular but good enough.
I have a greater number of critical observations, which knock my rating from five stars to four. Although more numerous, my negative points do not outweigh the positives.
The only big mistakes, I think, were efforts to expand the story. Alexander's father takes his son through an abandoned, derelict house where they used to live. I don't see the point. Maybe this is a symbol of Russia's decay? The book is explicitly set in 1838, but the movie moves the time forward to at least the late 19th century or perhaps early 20th. There is a scene of peasants on the march, which I interpret as a sign of the revolution coming to sweep away this decadent society. I suppose it was a signature of 1970 art films to push the envelope with sex and nudity. In this case, Alexander surrepticiously watches Zinaida touch her breasts for a considerable period of time. I don't see the point of this addition except for shock value. Turgenev uses Zinaida's mother sparingly for comic relief, and I think he does it brilliantly. The movie gives her a lot of extra lines showing her boorish behavior, and the joke is overdone. On the other hand, the movie passes up a good joke when Alexander works himself into a murderous frenzy as he holds a knife. In the movie he has a small hunting knife that could easily cause severe injuries; in the book he brandishes a penknife.
The film is grainy and the colors look somewhat washed out. I don't know if this was intentional or if a low-quality print was used for the transfer to digital format.
Overall I recommend the movie highly, and I hope viewers will be drawn to read the source material.
The two main characters were just ok but I felt like the rest of the cast were the real stars of this movie. They were varied and interesting. As well as funny since nothing seemed to go right for any of them. The best character in the movie for me by far is the girl you see on the cover, she was just awesome.
This movie does come with a slipcover.
