The First is one of three short story prequels to Jason Mott's debut novel The Returned, these stories are currently all available for free on Amazon and other ebook stores (I don't know if this will change in the future) and are a nice introduction to the world that the author has created. The novel already has a lot of hype surrounding it and has even been picked up by Brad Pitt's production company to be turned into a TV series so I was very curious to try these prequels.

In this story Emily has been grieving for her fiancé Edmund ever since he died almost a year ago and she is finally facing up to the fact that it is time for her to move on with her life. Then one day Edmund mysteriously returns from the dead, not as a ghost but as a real living person. For Edmund it seems like no time has passed but for Emily everything is different, she is thrilled by the idea of having him back but terrified in case it isn't real. Can they find their way back to each other and make the most of the second chance they have been given?

This was an interesting taster and a great way to try out the author's writing style and see if you'd like to read The Returned, it even includes a sample chapter from the main novel at the end (I didn't read that myself because I hate starting a book and not being able to immediately read until the end) for anyone who is interested in reading it. Edmund is the first person to return from the grave and as such it causes widespread panic, especially when it becomes clear he isn't the only one. Nobody knows why some people are returning and we don't even start to get answers about that which shouldn't be surprising as I'm sure that's what the book will be about.

Just imagine seeing pictures of your fiancée after being run over by a bus.. funeral held, grieving process goes on and finally after one year, you see him alive on TV.

This is a story of human loss, the reaction to death and the grieving process. After that process, the human spirit is re-awakened with its hopes and dreams for the future.

A wonderful start to this series and highly recommended.

The forward to this book is so compelling that I knew I would read the other books in this series even before I started the first chapter simply because of the author's comments. I want to share excerpts from Jason Mott's comments about his motivation. " This story is born out of my novel, The Returned, about a global event in which long-deceased loved ones have begun returning from the dead.....We all have many methods and mechanisms ...to help us conquer the silence left behind by the passing of a loved one. Some of us isolate ourselves from memories. We pack away the photo albums, clean out closets....Others cling to memory. We vow never to forget and create memories...Ultimately, my sincerest hope is that these stories encourage you to reflect on the people you care about. The goal...is not simply to brood over death and loss, but to remind us that our loved ones are always a part of our lives, whether we hold them close ...or let the bonds with which we cling to their memories slip ans slowly drift away." This says it all. The First is a companion book to the novel The Returned, which is about the return of a child. It is one of several about people who return and the impact of this miracle on their loved ones. The writing is beautiful and the implausible story makes you believe and care about the people as you witness their struggle to deal with a new reality, one they thought they had lost forever. This book will make you think.

Magnificent beginning to a thoughtful drama of how people might and probably would behave in the face of inexplicable happenings on such a grand scale. An amazing novel for everyone who has lost some one dear to them and wondered what it would be like to see and talk to them. To get just one more chance to hold that person and tell them once more how much they were missed and much you love them. Would it not be every one's dream.

What a remarkable concept...truly imaginative! It really makes you wonder how would people deal with family members returning from beyond the grave. It does spark quite a conversation and a host of emotions.

Having already finished reading the book "The Returned", I found out about this short story trilogy. So I went back and read this which is intended to be read as an introduction to the book. It also contains a preview of the novel. In the first chapter of "The Returned" Edmund Blithe is mentioned in one sentence as being the very first reported Returned. This is his story. It is a story of young love, the sadness of fresh grief and the feelings of starting to accept a loved one's death after a year long mourning period. A lovely, beautiful tale that makes one think what one would do if given the chance to spend an unknown amount of time with a dearly cherished loved one who has passed on. It makes me wish I could read the book for the first time again! Go ahead and whet your appetite!

It's hard to categorize this story. It's a romance, with a kind-of ghost so does that make it a paranormal romance? However, the ghost isn't really a ghost.

Whatever it is, it was wonderful. I'm planning on reading the other 2 prequels I have and start the rest (beginning?) of the series.
