This is the second story in this series I have read, and it is full of mystery, secrets, suspense, and new beginnings. The relationship Athena, nicknamed Thea, with McKenzie who has been dubbed Zee, is one full of compassion, love, and caring.
Athena Gregory will accept a job in Sweet Grove, Texas as a nanny to a five-year-old, MacKenzie Applegate. The hours are flexible enough that she will also be able to continue researching for a private job she is handling on the side.
Dr. Thor Applegate has many layers to his personality and his profession. A doting father, a widower, and also a man who does undercover work for an agency within the government that takes him out of town often. The death of his wife has left him, and his daughter haunted and moving to a quiet town to heal also brings the need for a nanny for MacKenzie.
The plot has many twists and turns in this unusually roller coaster ride of mystery and suspense. There is a great cast of characters, plenty of unknowns, and secrets. The bonding between Thea and Zee is smooth and their relationship full of love and trust. Thor and Thea have a rockier situation, he is more cautious, and some of his mannerisms make him seem distant and untrusting.
Thea has a sixth sense about her and at times feels as if she and Zee are being watched but can never discover if that is true. Learning that the home is full of monitoring devices leaves her feeling as if her privacy has been violated.
The story will take on several situations that put Thea on not only alert, but also Thor, and a team of security agents will be brought in as a precautionary measure. When Zee comes missing after school, it will have everyone scrambling to locate the little girl. Will Thea have to leave to protect Zee or will it be to protect herself? She and Thor have teetered against an attraction that has her questioning more and feeling confused.
While the story has some mentioning of prayer and church, it is not at all preachy, but a testament to the faith and comfort Thea finds in seeking God in prayer. It is a beautiful, clean, contemporary romance that has hope for new beginnings, and a chance for healing from a painful past.
This book was fun and fast paced. Lots of story packed in those pages.
I received a copy of this book through the author, all opinions are my own.
