I really like this heroine, Laura: a tall, cool blonde, a world-famous journalist, sure and brave, and a sexually confident woman. And the hero... this taste of Javier only makes me want more of him: brave and protective, a sexy Navy SEAL, and one hot Latin lover. I loved the voice of his character, the feel of him, caring and macho and also pretty damn sweet. I already love this sexy man. And that glimpse of possessiveness and dominating alpha male we see in the bedroom was way hot.
This is an erotic short story about a weekend of no-strings sex, some fun on the down-time, a way to relax and unwind and to connect with a stranger in a foreign country, but the sex leads to more for Laura and Javi, a much deeper connection in the making. It was sensual and erotic, but the author also made sure to include a sense of tenderness to it all. I really liked that about the story. It was more than sex, it felt more, and it makes me want to see this couple be together.
Since this is a prequel, it does end in a cliffhanger, one that left me feeling very anxious and worried for Laura. It was exciting and scary at the same time. A perfect set-up for what's to come in Striking Distance, which I think is going to be good, very good, and emotional, too.
First Strike is a terrific sensual novella written by romantic suspense writer Pamela Clare that puts the focus on two people fated to meet in Dubai for rest and relaxation: Javier Cobray, a USNavy Seal, and an investigative reporter, Laura Nilsson. What happens then is a steamy, sex-filled erotic interval, illegal in Dubai for ex-pat Americans, especially women.
Much more than sex takes place, as they reluctantly say their goodbyes at the end of three amazing days (and nights) together--and she goes back to her reporting beat, he returns to duty with the Teams.
But Javier can't get her out of his head . . .
Two months later, during a beer and brat barbeque downtime, Javier and his fellow Team members are horrified to witness Laura's live TV broadcasted kidnapping by al-Qaeda terrorists...
He never told anyone about that wonderful weekend...and he is shattered...
This is a cliffhanger for the upcoming Striking Distance, setting the stage for the next steps in a dangerous journey between terrorist's revenge and Javier and Laura's struggle to recover, to survive and to finally love without fear . . .
Pamela Clare is one of my favorite authors. There's nothing she has published that I haven't loved and 're read over and over. This novella is no exception. I love the fact that the hero is Puerto Rican. Being Hispanic myself it was really gratifying to read about a hot Latin lover and Clare does exceptionally well with the conversational Spanish phrases. The heroine was a match for the hero in every respect though be aware if you like your heroines virginal or inexperienced you will be dissatisfied. Laura is highly sexual and not afraid to show it.
For any non rabid Pamela Clare fans out there be aware this is a prequel to Striking Distance and I would highly recommend reading this first because it does set up the story plus the love scenes are oh-my-God I need a fan and a cold shower hot.
A solid five star read from an author who never disappoints.

I had to drink a glass of cold water for that one. But it establishes the relationship between the main characters for the book, Striking Distance.
