Many friends told me balance bikes were the way to go when your kiddo is first learning to ride a bike.
I did some research and found the FirstBike. The price of the FirstBike was around the same cost as a name brand balance bike at my local bike shop.
I ordered off amazon and the bike came quick and assembled in a snap.
My son was a little frustrated at first as a balance bike at low speeds is kind of tough. He stuck with it and practice got him gliding along in no time. He ended up loving the balance bike and enjoyed it for months. Once he had mastered the balance bike we purchased him a "big boy" bike on amazon. Here is the best part! The first time we took him out on his new pedal bike he took off! First try! The balance bike gave him the skill he needed to balance and all he had to do was start peddling. I would highly recommend this product or at least any balance bike before moving on to a pedal bike. Skip the training wheels and the false security they give.
This bike is great quality, it’s light, and it has limited steering which helps new riders not over-turn and crash.
I wish they made pedal bikes!
All I could find was the Cross and I was a little nervous about it since it has the nubby tires and we mainly ride on concrete and asphalt. Let me tell you, the tires make little difference. Don't hesitate to buy the Street or the Cross if you are riding on mostly grass, gravel, or hard surface. Both my kids ride on all surfaces, one with Street and one with Cross and they both do fine.
The bikes are light yet sturdy and I really like the steering limiter and the air tires. The kids haven't learned how to use the hand brake yet but they are good with using their feet to slow down. They race down hills and over flat surfaces. In less than a couple weeks they were pros!
Everywhere we go with the bikes we get smiles and compliments. Some people have never seen balance bikes and other people think it's cute to see kids so small riding bikes as well as they do. Very very very highly recommended. I would not sit on the fence. If you are thinking about a balance bike throw in a few extra bucks and get a FirstBIKE. You will not regret your decision. Your kids will love it.
The composite material makes this very light, yet durable. It's very easy to carry, which is convenient. The ability to adjust the seat without tools, has come in handy: I've been out with my son and experimented with different heights very easily, to get what is most comfortable for him.
Having hand brakes (instead of dragging feet) make a huge difference for my son. He now goes at a jogging pass, effortlessly. He loves it.
Honestly: it is perfect
