But it only earned 4 stars because the book could use a good proofreading and that detracts from the flow of the story. I had to guess at some words as they were left out. ie. the, a, of. (I think the author may have done his own proofreading and that often leads to skipped words because the author knows they're supposed to be there and doesn't even miss them.) Then there were a few words that were obviously just wrong. Spellchecker maybe?
Anyway, keep up the good work Mr. Attard and I'll be back for more.
If you have read all of the Harry Dresden stories like me, then I strongly recommend you give this new series a try. I would be very surprised if it doesn't grab you and rapidly draw you into Erik's world like it did me. It even has a dry, wry, dark sense of humor and deplorable jokes that will give you a feeling of familiarity.
Make no mistake, however, despite what seems at first strong parallels to Dresden, Erik's magical powers are uniquely his own and he has abilities that far surpass his doppelganger, especially Dresden's abilities in his earlier adventures. Give Erik a chance and he will both impress and entertain you in a high octane, breathlessly high velocity rush of kick-ass action. You GO Erik!
PS--Be sure to join Ryan Attard's website and email list. You could score some bonuses! (You will find the links in the book. )
It has an amazing backstory, sarcastic supporting characters and enough witty dialogue to have you holding your side with stiches from laughing too much.
Erik is a geeky, amazed by his own sense of humour, protagonist who has serious family issues but never sees himself as a victim but instead turns out to be an unlikely hero.
While reading about the various angels and demon that appear throughout this book, you can see the effort in research that Ryan has put out in detailing this book varying characters. It is a job well done. Happy writing Ryan
I read the whole series in four days.
I highly recommend it.
Apart from its fantasy elements and nonstop action, the book is a delight to read. Attard pulls out all the stops on witty dialog, irony, parody, and snark. (I didn't study snark as a topic in English, but I know it when I see it.) Amaymon, the cat-demon familiar, has just enough cat to be cute, and just enough demon to be interesting. And you will find yourself sympathizing with Abi, the succubus--you, and all the male characters in the book. Throw in a few surprise reveals at the end, and it's a nice, tight, fun read.
I highly recommend "Firstborn" to readers of Tom Holt, Sharyn McCrumb, and others who write fantasy with a grain of salt and a dollop of well-seasoned humor.
The only thing is that i wish there was more personal interactions with the other characters. It gets summarized more than i like, then we are left with what it SHOULD feel like but never got to see. If that makes sense. Sure him and his familiar banter a lot but still. Maybe it's just cuz nothing but huge things have been happening, and i want to see them do a regular job together. I know that's not the theme of this book though.
