Editorial Reviews

The Dr. will see you now. Basketball's Dr. J - Julius Erving - operates on the competition in this hoop-it-up disco-era fantasy about a team on a winning streak when it signs up motley players born under the zodiac's fish sign of Pisces.

With the Dr. in the house, trademark cloud-walking, net-shredding slam dunks are plentiful. More hoops excitement follows as the Harlem Globetrotters' Meadowlark Lemon handles the rock as if he had more arms than an octopus and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shows his winning style as well. Off the court, Flip Wilson is a beleaguered coach and Jonathan Winters plays the dual roles of an ill-natured mogul and a sweet-natured nitwit. The world isn't round in The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh. It's roundball. Fish fever - hook it!

My interest in this film was piqued for a couple of reasons. In a recent book called "The 100 Greatest Sports Movies" this one came in at....Number 100. I was on the bus not too long ago and I was within earshot of an African-American gentleman who was discussing with his friend his favorite movies and "The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh" was mentioned. This isn't the greatest movie in the world nor the funniest. The direction by Gilbert Moses is a little shaggy and the acting in some cases, most notably by the aforementioned Julius Erving, is near non-existent. The film gets by, however, on high spirits and it's buoyancy is infectuous. I was 16 when this film came out in 1979 so there's a little bit of nostalgia going on here. Can't say enough about the polyester, strobe lights, mile-high fros, and uber-micro basketball shorts. This film holds up for me because I was of that time. Maybe the modern basketball fan might appreciate it for the montage of jump shots that Erving makes.

This movie is a classic, and some of us do remember the original version. Although I loved the movie (now and back when it first came out), I was not too happy to find so many crucial scenes missing. I didn't see the need to remove the scenes, or how the editors thought no one would notice. The movie itself is inspiring and encourages one to dig deeper within themselves. It is also very entertaining and the music is great. Despite the editing flaws, I would still recommend.

This DVD is the unedited version of this cult classic, unlike the VHS version that came out in the mid 90's. However the voice over announcing the Sylvers is still missing (this version matches the version I taped off of Cinemax in 1988). The VHS version has a lot of edits (language, gestures etc), but DOES HAVE the voice over, announcing the Sylvers intro (go figure). The scene is the same, its just the voice over.

This is a minor emission, and a whole better than the VHS version (that is why I kept my Cinemax tape all these years).

This is a great transfer, and includes the trailer for the film (which has scenes that were edited from the film as well).

Classic movie from my childhood that unfortunately is ignored due to the whole "disco connection" that shows itself not only in the soundtrack, but in the clothes, language and era. Still, it's an entertaining piece of nostalgia.

We purchased two different copies of this and the menus didn't work on either copy. We noticed on the second copy a warning on the back that reads, "This disc is expected to playback in DVD VIDEO 'Play Only' devices, and may not playback in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives."

This warning was not posted on Amazon anywhere.

We returned both copies.

This is a classic movie with Dr. J. - what else could you need? As a bonus, you get Meadowlark Lemon and a lot of contemporary NBA players from that era and a lot of laughs. Just watched it again with my 8 year old son and he loved it. Slam dunk all the way!

A favorite movie from my youth that I remember seeing in the theater, I hesitated to get this at first, thinking that it was not an official studio release, but after reading reviews and determining that indeed it was, I jumped right on it. This had to be one of the "most wanted" DVD movies, and I'm glad the powers that be decided to put it out. Thoroughly entertaining sports movie with many legends and greats from the world of basketball, and an interesting story line. Brought back a lot of memories and I'm glad to finally be able to add it to my library.
