Learning content changes as baby grows – with Smart Stages technology!
Every baby develops at their own pace, and Smart Stages technology lets you select the stage that’s best for your child! There are a variety of developmentally appropriate songs, phrases and sounds within three levels of play – just slide the switch!
3 Levels of Development
Level 1 – Explore – 12M+
Hands-on exploration rewards baby with fun sounds, phrases and sing-along songs. Baby can press any of the ABC buttons to hear first words like, “cookie.”
Level 2 – Encourage – 18M+
This level encourages baby to find letters and objects! Music, sounds and voice phrases reward baby for playing. Press buttons to hear prompts like, “Find monkey.”
Level 3 – Pretend – 24M+
Just like a real tablet—but even more fun! Realistic flat-screen tablet encourages imitation and imagination through early role play. “Neighhhh! Can you neigh like a horse?"
Expand the play – there’s an “app” for that on this tablet!
- As baby grows, continue to encourage play and learning. Give your little one suggestions such as, “Press H.” And, “Can you find all the orange buttons?”
Develop & grow
Silly sounds, music and 6 sing-along songs introduce letters of the alphabet from A-Z, animals, first words and colors. Pressing the 28 app buttons helps strengthen baby’s eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills. And by pressing buttons to activate music, phrases, sounds and the light-up screen, baby is introduced to cause and effect.
Baby's first tablet introduces letters, first words, animals and more! Introducing Baby's very own tablet-the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Smart Stages Tablet! This tablet includes Smart Stages technology, an exciting new way to change the learning content as baby grows! Because every baby develops at their own pace, Smart Stages technology gives you the ability to select the stage that's best for your child! There are a variety of developmentally appropriate songs, phrases and sounds within three levels of play. Baby can press one of 28 "app" buttons to activate sounds and music - and unlock learning about letters, first words, animals and more. To add even more fun, the tablet screen will light up and twinkle along to the songs and phrases.

I do like the ability to turn it on and off! Some toys with sound don't have this option, which is crazy and annoying and burns out the batteries. This also has the option for two different volume levels, which can help in the car or quiet living room vs. in a loud place where baby can't hear as well.
The little grey slider bar at the bottom of the "screen" doesn't do anything - it's just for show. So don't think you have control over brightness, fast forwarding, locking, or refreshing - despite the fact that those indicators are printed there.
Finally, the frustration-free instead of the standard packaging was great. I can't tell you how many times our kids received a gift, and then we had to snip an abundance of tough wires, ties, and/or tape to get it out of the package. The packaging for this makes it more fun right away for both the child and the parent when received as a gift!
Note the outer 3/4 ring lights up various colors when buttons are pressed or music is playing. It is super-bright, especially at night.
The only complaint I have (and it is really nitpicking) is some of the letters correspond to derivative slang like "Froggy" vs. "Frog". Our preference has always been for our toddler to learn the actual words vs. slang.
Update. ..if you are picking between similar fisher price products I would say that my kids love the laptop first...then it's a toss up between the tv remote and cell phone. This tablet doesn't get much action. If you are specifically looking to distract your 1 year old from your tablet...then probably get thid. Your 2 or 3 year old has probably already figured out its not the real thing.
Fisher-Price is a trusted brand in our house - for both quality and safety. The Laugh and Learn Smart Stages Tablet is well made, bold colors (see pictures), lights up, and has clear sound. Oh yes, it does come with batteries so it is ready to use right from the time you open it.
For the younger ones, push the picture and it will tell you the name of the object. For example, push the ice cream cone and it says "Ice Cream". As the child gets older, simple adjust the button on the bottom left corner (see picture) to the next stage. Push that same picture, "I - Ice Cream" and it will say the letter "I" it begins with. The final stage for the older child is for pretend play. For example, the Jet makes a whoosh sound as if it is ready for take off. In addition to all of this, there is a music button to play short song clips.
We are very pleased with the Fisher-Price Laugh and Learn Smart Stages Tablet. The little one is 3 and is having a lot of fun pretending it is a tablet. He and his brother pretend they are from the show, Paw Patrol, and this is their Paw Tablet! I love the idea of incorporating pretend play.
My personal thoughts - if you buy this for a child that has 24/7 access to their own computer, tablet or phone, this will not be much fun for them. If your child has limited or no use, they will love pretending with their own tablet. Another review mentioned that it wasn't "educational", but I disagree with that comment. Anytime you are exposing your child to the world of imagination or the letter of the alphabet, that becomes educational. Education is not just flashcards and learning from memorization. No, this isn't an iPad and it isn't meant to be one. I love the use that ours is getting and for the price point it makes a great gift for someone! Oh and we LOVE how it lights up!
