It is a set of two and each one makes a rattling noise on one end. The other end is a soft and chewable cozy teether. I was able to wash them (one at a time to make sure there was always one available) and let them air dry. I was very careful not to submerge the rattling side of the toy.
While the original purpose of buying these were to distract him from pulling out his nasal gastric tube, once he was able to have the tube removed permanently, these toys have remained a big part of our daily music play. I've added some other pieces but more than a year later, he still loves holding both of these in his hands and shaking them as he stomps around the room.
I can't recommend this highly enough - they are great for babies and for toddlers, too.
I am now ready to purchase neonatal birth

Small enough to put in a diaper bag, not too loud, and My 6 month old loves these!Published 5 hours ago by Beth Gabel
Feel a little cheap (I guess the price says they are). Hard to clean as the soft part will get really wet but the rattle part is not safe for the dryer.Published 2 days ago by KJC1
Disappointed with the product as a whole. The rattle is supposed to make rattling sound. This hardly makes any rattling sound. It's so low the baby hardly hears it. Read morePublished 2 days ago by This is It
Fun for my 6 month old. wish both ends were padded. she's bonked herself in the face a few times playing with them, but nothing too bad.Published 2 days ago by britney
This is my babies favorite toy! So easy to grab and hold onto. Soft side is great for learning how to coordinate hand / arm movements. Read morePublished 2 days ago by Amazon Customer
