Top customer reviews
I would like to take a moment to thank you for this delightful sea-friend I received. It accompanies me everywhere and I am apt to fall asleep with it at my side in my infant carrier. The music often softly plays to help soothe me despite my attempts to not fall asleep, and the glowing belly is quite interesting! No longer am I fearful at night while mommy drives, as my sea friend keeps me company with its glowing belly and lovely lullabies.
A Comforted Infant
P.s. I love licking my sea friends nose and playing with the interesting fins. Aunty doesn't seem as enthusiastic about me tasting my friend, claiming the cleaning is tricky - whatever that means.
EDITED TO ADD: There were some questions about this model compared to the one they sold 2-3 years ago. In all the attached pictures the NEW one is on the left and the OLD one is on the right.
The former version was the seventh most popular toy for young babies and tots until news got out that some of the toys were heating up and smoking when their adult users changed the batteries. There was never an official recall ,and as far as I know, no babies were hurt, but there was an avalanche of negative reviews and many negative consumer watch news stories in the media.
That was last year. Turn the calendar ahead and we now have the new Fisher-Price Soothe and Glow Seahorse. It looks exactly the same. It plays the exact same music. The only difference was a redesign of the working battery pack mechanism inside the Seahorse. I think, as consumers, we can assume that the problem has been resolved. That’s good, because, this product was a clear winner for all those parents and babies out there who used it and didn’t experience any fire hazard problems. If you look at the reviews for the old version, there are actually far more over-the-top positive five-star reviews for the product than there were one-star reviews warning about the potential fire hazard.
So, in some respects, the consumer won; the product was redesigned.
I gave this to my niece and her six-month-old baby. She phoned me to report that both of them absolutely adore it! She’s so happy with it; she says, “It works like magic! The baby took to it immediately…and so did my two year old.” Evidently, the older one loves the glow light as much as the music.
So how does it work? When the Seahorse’s soft yellow plastic belly is squeezed, it starts glowing and soft soothing music comes out through the fabric of the toy. The music is synthesized instrumental music. In the background, very faintly, there is the constant sound of water, either the sound of gurgling, or the sound of water lapping against a boat or shore. There are eight melodies. The Seahorse plays a few phrases from each tune in a slow, measured, and unembellished fashion; the musical emphasis is entirely on calmness and serenity. Each tune tapers off in pitch and tempo after a short time, then there is a soothing lapping water sound, then a bit of silence, then another tune begins. The entire repertoire lasts six-and-a-half minutes. Finally, after the last song tapers off, the glow light flickers off and the cycle is complete. Every time the Seahorse is squeezed, it goes through the exact same repertoire. If it’s squeezed while it is in the middle of its repertoire, it ignores the squeeze and continues till the end of the cycle. If, for any reason, you want to turn the device off in the middle of its repertoire, all you need to do is to hold the squeeze extra long until it shuts off. Remember this: it is not in the instructions, and I learned it only by accident, but it works perfectly every time.
For those of you who are interested in exactly what music your child will hear, these are the melodies:
1) Petzold’s “Minuet in G major (made popular fifty years ago as "A Lover's Concerto" and given lyrics that begin “How gentle is the rain);”
2) The popular English lullaby, "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star;"
3) Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy;”
4) The lullaby “Golden Slumbers;”
5) Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring;”
6) The lullaby “Sleep Baby Sleep”
7) Pachelbel's Canon in D; and
8) The French nursery rhyme, "Frère Jacques" (in English, translated as “Where is Thumbkin?”
The music has two settings of loudness. The glow light is soft and reassuring, definitely designed gently to sweep fear out of dark corners, but not to be so bright that it might interfere with sleep. There is nothing about the Seahorse that could serve as a choke hazard. The electrical mechanism can be separated from the Seahorse if the fabric part needs cleaning. You’ll have to remove the electrical mechanism eventually to insert two AA alkaline batteries when the original batteries start to fail. The instructions now emphasize (with bold print) the use of alkaline batteries. There is a Velcro closure at the back. It may take some effort to make sure the two Velcro strips are fully matched so no Velcro remains on the outside to detract from the overall furry softness and appeal of this cuddly calming creature.
I can see absolutely no reason not to give this enjoyable, and very useful, toy an enthusiastic five-star rating.
Just set it on the low volume setting, and place it along the corner of their bed (near their feet if you're uncertain about safety). When you're done feeding/rocking/singing/shushing/bouncing, lay them down near it and they'll be asleep before the auto-off timer kicks in.
Normal name-brand batteries last around 4 months of daily use, in my experience.
My kids absolutely loved theirs from birth through 3 years old. We ultimately bought a "backup seahorse" for travel (but believe me, they KNOW the difference between their own and a different one). ...and now I give them as gifts to everyone.
Addendum: Low-speed box fan in the room (pointed away/at/near the wall) pairs perfectly with this for amazing sleep.
I originally purchased the Blue seashore for my son in 2013.
It was soft and squishy, unlike the modern "glo-worm" (this is a plus)
The Songs & light are soothing, not too long, & I like that I can choose from 2 different volume settings.
The belly is soft and easy for baby to turn on.
Flash forward to 2015- purchased this in pink for my daughter & it's also one of her favorites.
My son is now 3 & daughter is 1- they both love their "Glo-worms" & sleep with them every night.
*I've been able to remove the insides & wash the plush part in the washing machine bmultiple times. Still looks great.
***I've read about issues people have claimed about burning or a burning smell-thankfully we have NOT experienced any issues of this sort.
For all the one star givers, turn the thing off and then back on to get it off TRIAL MODE. After yuh do this the music and light works as it was intended.
I was thrilled to get it in a simple box, not the decorative hassle full box. It was in a plastic bag in a sealed box so I find it more likely to be cleaned than the display boxes.
Yes it is the updated safe one. The battery compartment is made for two batteries.
It works perfectly and is exactly what I expected.
