The Story of Thomas & Friends
Our story begins in 1917 in the sleepy village of Box in Wiltshire, England. A young boy lies awake in his bed, listening to steam engines huffing and puffing along the nearby Great Western Railway. To the little boy tucked up in bed, listening to the engines, it sounds very much like the trains are talking to each other. The young boy is Wilbert Awdry – later to become the Reverend W. Awdry, the creator of 'The Railway Series' and the most famous tank engine in the world — Thomas.
Thomas is the No. 1 blue engine. He is a cheeky little engine who often gets into scrapes, usually by being over-eager to do things best left to bigger and more sensible engines. But clouds never last long in Thomas’ world and soon he’s bustling about again, playing his part in the yard and on his very own branch line. Thomas works hard and he always strives to be a 'Really Useful Engine.'
What does Thomas mean to kids?
Thomas is a real friend to kids. Inspired by his adventures in episodes or books, your child then lives out their own Thomas stories through imaginative train play. As a result, they begin to understand important life lessons about problem solving and their emotions. Through their friendship with Thomas, you may witness physical, cognitive and social growth.
Benefits of Play
- Thomas & Friends Minis offer a variety of colors and textures that provide a vivid sensory experience for your child, with plenty of visual and tactile stimulation. In addition, grasping the engines, picking them up, and rolling them along can help encourage eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity. Finally, seeing typical characters with new and unique artwork can also inspire imaginations as children create their own adventures for these cool little engines.
A Countdown to Christmass
Children can imagine a fun-filled holiday tale with a calendar that lets them countdown to Christmas with their favorite engine friends. The calendar is decorated with beautiful Christmas-themed images, and there are 6 exclusive holiday-themed Minis. Behind each door of the calendar is a Minis engine to mark each day along the journey to a festive holiday celebration!

Behind each of the easy to open, clearly marked 24 calendar windows is a different plastic train piece with wheels that freely turn. Each piece can be placed on the fold-down printed cardboard base. The little engines and cars can roll around the printed tracks and with each day’s unveiling another one is added to the group.
The box is sturdy and the windows not flimsy and it is possible to push them back into place. So if desired, at the end of the season the pieces may be returned to their windows and it could be stored for re-use next year. The age designation is 3 years and up.
These trains are pretty small (see the picture), but they're still pretty fun.
The worst thing I can say about them is that they don't really fit on any other train track, which is unfortunate because my kids have that wooden train track set that every little kid seems to have. My kid also gets frustrated by the way that the trains don't really hook together in a secure way, so pulling a line of cars over a ripple in the blanket or something causes them to uncouple and leave cars behind.
But overall, he seems to be having fun with them, and he likes opening a new train each day.
