You can tell this little (I say little jokingly, the thing is enormous) trowel is a Fiskar. It's the same high-quality construction sewers have depended on in scissors etc. for years.

This would be really perfect for planting bulbs or large, live plants. You are going to move some dirt with this. Seriously, it's big. We have clay in our soil where I live, and this thing isn't going to have a problem cutting right through even the worst dirt. It's really nice. Well worth the money.

It's Like Using A Short Handled Shovel !!!

Fiskars has come out with a "Big Boy Toy" for those of us who routinely break PVC or aluminum trowels. It's nice to be able to move twice as much dirt while still having complete control over what you're trying to plant or transplant. Fiskar products have been kind of "hit or miss" for me the last couple of years but this simple and durable (and cheap) trowel is a real winner.

The handle is wrapped with a soft gripping material to keep your hands from slipping and/or getting sore. The sharp blade is made of aluminum and resists rust, a must-have attribute for the heat and humidity of Southwest Florida. The only improvement/change that I have made to this trowel is to spray paint the handle a flourescent orange. I spend a lot of time outside working on my landscaping and often set it down and forget where I left it. Making the handle more visible against a green background really helps.

Fiskar, if you're listening, please consider adding brilliant colors to all of your gardening tools so that when dropped (or left somewhere) that it's easier to find them. The orange tip on this trowel is helpful but it would be better if the whole handle was bright orange -- or lime green, flashy pink, etc.

This trowel has a large surface to move a lot of soil in half the time of a normal size trowel. Good to use in small spaces where a shovel would be difficult to maneuver. Perfect for getting bedding plants in the ground quickly. Large but not heavy. I have used this for many years. My friend saw it & had to have one, so I got her this one.

Good, all-purpose trowel, but it is not very sharp -- in fact, the leading edge is quite thick and blunt. Not good for cutting into fairly hard and dry garden soil. When I'm digging a hole for a new plant (1- to 3-gallon size, where I'm not standing up using a shovel), I have to use the Fiskars trowel along with a narrower, much-sharper trowel (True Temper Hand Transplanter Trowel - 1983600, also bought on Amazon).

I returned these after ordering six, because when they arrived they were more like small hand shovels, rather than garden trowels. Seemed quite sturdy, although some negative reviews said handles broke off while using - but since I never used them, I don't know. The thickness of the metal on the trowel end, however, results in an edge that is not sharp - so that's not good. I think another reviewer mentioned he'd had to sharpen the edge to make it useful. Even with sharp edges though, they're way too big unless you need to use as a scoop.

I have had a very bad run of Garden care this year, (open heart surgery for my husband), so my usually clean rows are smothered in quack Grass and some horrible ground cover. I have used a small metal shovel for years, so decided to give this a try. I AM SO GLAD I DID! It does not appear to be sharp, or easily used. However, once you get this trowel into the soil, it is a winner. Roots out roots, cultivates and makes this grandma very happy.

I like the Fiskars family of products but the one thing you got to be careful about is picking the wrong Fiskar tool or not using it the right way because what happens is your image an impression can think it went to China and junk. In this case I am impressed with the size of the trowel itself and I use it for bird feed but could also use it for dirt digging for the yard, back to my original comments I've had these products from Fiskars before and was somewhat surprised at some of them breaking or coming apart. So let's see if I revise this review in a couple of reasonable years time

I realize this is labeled “Big Grip” but my bad for I didn’t look for the true dimensions of this trowel~which aren’t in the description. It didn’t meet my needs as it was too big. Besides that it had scratches showing upon receiving. In just observing & touching the “material” used to create this trowel I don’t think it would have held up well. It felt like there was a coating of some sort over the shovel portion. A couple positives though~ it did have a nice hold & seemed sturdy but the negatives outweighed & I returned it.
