Excellent product and how to avoid accidentally unlocking the extension

I have bought two of these loppers over the past two years and found them to be excellent products. Several reviewers complain that the extension mechanism can easily get unlocked during use. This can be avoided by noticing that there are two ways you pick up the tool which are distinct. Pick up the tool and look at the arrows next to the word " open" written on the handle. They will either both point inward or outward. Flip the tool over and note that the arrows have reversed directions. The key is to hold the tool in your hands in such a way that the arrows both point inward. In the cutting motion there is a natural tendency to twist the handle in a clockwise direction. If the arrows are pointing outward, the locking mechanism will open. If you do not pay attention to this, you will find that halh the time the extension will collapse in your hand, causing great frustration. There is really nothing wrong with the product itself.

I have had these for about a year, one month more than. They have seen intermittent use and I was generally very happy with them. Today, while doing some winter/fall pruning of a Lilac bush, the handle collapsed/folded on me. They are done, useless at this point. To have reference, the branch was about 1.25" in diameter. Lilac can be tough stuff, but I thought I was in the clear and didnt seem to be putting too much stress on the tool. It broke anyway. They are great for light work. They cut soft green wood very well. I have submitted a warranty claim to Fiskars and hopefully they follow through with the warranty claim. Im getting a heavier duty set of loppers in the meantime. I will be getting Fiskars brand again. This model was just a toy I guess for the kind of work I end up doing with loppers. FOLLOW UP - I just got an email from Fiskars Warranty Service. They are going to send me a new pair of loppers with the extendable handle. Not sure if it will be the same exact model number, but they are a solid company with solid Cust Service. As stated before, I will remain with Fiskars as a consumer when they have the product Im looking for.

Extendable handles unlock constantly - unless you know the secret trick.

I used these and had a constant problem with the handles unlocking with every chop.

Then I read a review here and learned that you MUST hold the tool with the "OPEN" arrows pointing toward each other. If you pick up the tool with its "backside" up, the handles will unlock constantly.

MAY I ADD - this tip works only for right-handed people. If you are left-handed, you must NOT hold the tool with the "OPEN" arrows pointing at each other - flip it over. I read the post that said how to hold the tool -- the way it described did not work for me, indeed, the handles unlocked at every stroke. So, on a hunch, I flipped the lopper over and found out how to use it successfully.

I'm giving this tool ONE STAR because a) this is very bad design, b) the trick should not be kept a secret, but should be in the instructions, and c) yet another tool that is more difficult for left-handed people to use safely.

I have a real mess on my hands in that I recently aquired a home with slightly over two acres with a wide variety of trees and shrubs that was neglected and allowed to grow wild for approximately 10 years. 100 foot long runs of Catbriars that laughed at every herbicide I threw at it, a privet invasion that was killing off the all my fruit bearing trees and growths that mutated over time from weeds and wild plants into a maneating jungle.

I figured I'd destroy my first set of Loppers before I finished my first phase cleanup so I went for budget expense and prayed they made it to the finish line

I proceeded to put a couple years worth of daily hard core use on these in the month that I have owned them on thumb sized and better limbs, vines and branches both live and dead against recommendations and basically ignoring the suggested cut size stretching the limit of it's maximum cut way more than once. I've dug them in the dirt cutting, I've flexed the handles 10 degrees at least cutting branches well over spec and made no effort at all to be nice to them as I used them.

In short I not only tried to break them I tried really really hard to do it and failed miserably. Durable, hold their edge well, light but sturdy, do the job and then some on a wide variety of trees, shrubs and ornamentals and makes a nice, precise cut. So far all I've done is oil them after use and touch up it's edge a couple of times and they work as well today as they did the day I got them. What I expected to get limited use and life from initially I now expect to outlive me.

Simply a wonderful tool that I can't recommend highly enough.

One of the handles does not extend. At all. Annoying, and defeats the purpose of choosing a lopper with extending handles.

Additionally, power transfer is extremely poor even with handles at shortest length. 1" branches are a hassle.

ADDITIONALLY, the handles rotate while in use (even with both at minimum length- not extended) and releasing the locking mechanism, making for terrible control and a much more difficult cut even at just 1".

Regret, I have it.

I have another pair of fiskars bypass loppers that are well over 8 years old now. It is still fantastic, though the metal loss from sharpening and removing knicks and burs over the years has worn the cutting edges. Quality has dipped, and I won't be bothering with Fiskars anymore. Live, lose and learn.

These things are amazing! I have a willow tree that dropped a lot of branches from wind storms and heavy freezes over the winter. I'm not talking twigs. I'm talking large branches. It made my tidy wood pile into a brush pile. These things made quick work of everything it could get its teeth around in short order. It's amazing how quickly and easily it could cut through every branch, wet or dry. You don't need much strength to use them either, as they offer plenty of leverage. The design is perfect. I cannot recommend these enough. A great purchase!

Gesucht wurde eine Schere mit langen Griffen, mit der ich meine Parkrose, die an einer etwas unzugänglichen Stelle steht, gefahrlos beschneiden kann. Ich besitze schon eine Astschere mit Teleskopgriffen, diese ist aber sehr schwer und der Schneidekopf ist klobig - mit der Schneidgiraffe wollte es auch nicht gut klappen.

Da ich mit Fiskars bereits gute Erfahrungen hatte, habe ich gezielt nach einem entsprechenden Produkt dieses Herstellers gesucht. Voraussetzung war, daß der Schneidkopf dem einer Rosenschere nahekommt, damit man im Rosendickicht gezielt schneiden kann.

Diese Anforderung wurde vollständig erfüllt: Die Schere ist gut handhabbar, die Griffe müssen nicht über Gebühr gespreizt werden um den Ast fassen zu können und der Schnitt ist sauber und glatt. Das Gewicht ist ebenfalls sehr nutzerfreundlich.

Ich habe mich auch anderswo nach eben dieser Schere umgesehen, bin aber nicht fündig geworden. Offenbar wird diese Schere in Deutschland nicht (mehr?) angeboten. Also habe ich die etwas höheren Versandkosten und die längere Versandzeit (8 Tage) in Kauf genommen. Für knapp EUR 27 (an der Kasse den Versand zu EUR 7,88 ausgewählt) eine tolle Schere!
PS: Auf amazon.com gibt es viele Bewertungen zu dieser Astschere.

Works but twist locks on handles are very flimsy!

Cuts 1.5" green/soft woods as advertised but twist locks on extendable handles are very weak. The weight of the tool itself is enough to unlock the handles when simply holding the tool by one handle. This made it very frustrating to handle and maneuver between trees/shrubs and I expected better from Fiskars.

If you need the length and only have a couple of branches to trim then its probably OK but if you have several branches to cut requiring any mobility to access then consider other alternatives.
