Fiskars steel D-handle digging shovel features a durable design that provides excellent grip when you are digging in the garden. The welded steel construction is far more durable than wood and won’t flex like fiberglass. The large D-handle design offers two-handed control, a sharpened blade cuts into dense soil easily, and an extra-large foot platform helps maximize force to break up hardened soil clods
The Fiskars digging shovel features an all-steel construction for heavy-duty strength and durability. The blade sports an oversized step for additional leverage and comfort, and is pre-sharpened to cut through a variety of different soils and materials. The teardrop-shaped shaft and oversized d-handle provide ergonomic comfort and control during use. For added strength, the blade itself is directly welded onto the shaft, and the entire shovel is powder-coated to prevent rust.

The shovel has been a delight to use, after just a few days of trying it out, breaking ground on a new small plot and removing a bunch of large lily bulbs neglected for at least a decade. It's sturdy, comfortable and has a decent weight & balance to it. I'm a short man at 67" and shrinking, and the length suits me well. The sharpened edge and oversized foot step make digging as effortless as I've ever known.
I was going to mark one and two-foot lines on it to easily determine how deeply I'd dug. But, after I put a measure to the unit I noticed the footstep was 12" above the tip of the shovel, and there's a clear horizontal line on the decal which is 24" above the tip. The decal may not last forever, but it seems substantial. So I won't take it off and will delay marking the 2-foot line as long as it lasts.
The D-handle seems a bit large to me, but not a problem, it should accommodate folks with bearish hands just fine.
I have a single criticism, but it has to do with shipping, not the shovel itself. It arrived in a comically large box, with minimal packing. Ok, so the shovel is sturdy and really didn't need much protection. But, my gawd, you could've easily fit FIVE of these shovels in that ridiculously large box!
I have no doubt this shovel will outlast me, and probably would if I'd bought it at half my age. Good stuff!
The shovel is great but the ground does still need to be broken up better for the shovel to be most effective, so I'm buying their tiller Fiskars 40 Inch Long Handle Steel Tiller (7990) now, since it just came back in stock. I'm really looking forward to what it'll do to my neglected little hard-packed yard.
