Product Description

Product Description

Trimmers are one of the "must haves" tool for a any home and office. There are three styles: Portable, known for quick and easy use; Rotary, known for precision cutting and having decorative blade solutions; Bypass, known for low maintenance. Fiskars takes pride having developed the Portable Paper Trimmer (PPT) category. Fiskars 12 Inch SureCut Recycled Titanium Portable Paper Trimmer is the ideal size for trimming coupons, office paper or photos as well as compact for easy storage. Its patent pending SureCut cut-line indicator shows you where the blade will cut, making it easier to align your project perfectly before you cut! The patented Triple Track System interlocks the blade and rail resulting in more accurate, precise straight cutting. This rail also pivots open to allow you to easily insert your project. The Recycled Titanium Portable Paper Trimmer has a precision printed scale and grid on a 100% recycled post-consumer base (the entire trimmer is 80% recycled post-consumer product) that allows the user to accurately align his/her project before making a cut. The titanium blade has a triple coating of titanium carbide that reduced friction and wear resulting in a sharper blade. This trimmer includes an ergonomic, high profile cutting carriage for a better grip on the blade to cut with and rubberized feet to keep the base from moving while cutting. With a minimum ½ Inch between the front and back fence, the 9 Inch SureCut Portable Paper Trimmer makes cutting small strips easy and cleanly. The integrated paper clamp allows you to hold your paper in place with the cutting rail and keeps fingers from touching your photos and potentially smudging them. Capable of cutting 7 sheets of 20lb copy paper up to 12 Inch long, the 12 Inch SureCut Recycled Titanium Portable Paper Trimmer uses replacement blade style I (Fiskars 01-005740) and comes with a Lifetime Warranty.

From the Manufacturer

The Good: If you only want to cut one sheet of paper, this trimmer works beautifully. It has a wire that shows you exactly where it's going to cut, so you can be sure and line your paper up precisely. I found that quite useful. It's lightweight and compact, as well, and it has a ruler built into it.

The Bad: It doesn't work as advertised, it's flimsy, and cheap. It says it will cut up to seven sheets of paper at a time, but I couldn't get it to work with more than three. And those, it tended to merely perforate instead of giving a clean cut, so I had to tear them apart along the score it made. If you're only cutting one sheet of paper, however, it works great! It's made of cheap plastic, so you have to treat it gently.

Conclusion: I definitely wouldn't pay full price for this trimmer. It's just too flimsy to get the job done. If you can find it for a couple of dollars, and you don't need to cut more than a page or two at a time, then I'd say go for it. Otherwise, find something more efficient.

The Fiskars 12 inch SureCut paper trimmer is very similar to another Fiskars paper trimmer I own (an older model that I've had for years, sorry there is no part number on that older one), with a few exceptions. The most notable improvement in my opinion is the added wire line which shows you exactly where your cut will be made, before you make the cut. Also useful, is the "smudge guard" on the cut rail which makes pivoting the rail up a bit easier as you now have something to grab.

As for the claim that it will cut seven sheets (that is printed on the box), I had my doubts, and upon testing I found out that it can cut 3 sheets of scrapbook paper, but not 4 and certainly not 7. Maybe newsprint, but not paper.

All in all, a nice product and a great tool for scrapbooking. It would have been helpful to have had an instruction sheet provided, or printed on the box, but neither were included.

I've had other Fiskars cutting utensils that were good quality tools. The SureCut Trimmer, though, is not. The wire guide unraveled with only about three weeks of occasional use, the frayed bits bunching up at either end of the slot, hanging up the blade or - before becoming bunched at the end - making the cuts very rough and ripped looking. The little blades dulled quickly on ordinary paper. I won't waste money on anything from Fiskars again.

I purchased this paper cutter based on the Fiskar name, But was dissapointed when the wire that you use to guide where the paper cuts works great for a couple of weeks, then the twisted guide wire start's to unravel and builds up on each end of the wire. Not allowing the Blade to return to it limit and then breaks totally defeating the acurate design of this cutter. Its still usable, but not very accurate with no wire. I purchashed a new one of differant design

If you need just the occasional paper trimming, this cutter will do the job. This unit is EXTREMELY light weight, the plastic thin and it has nowhere near the sturdiness or heft of other Fiskar paper trimmers (the rotary styles). Also, the swing arm that has measurements on it is difficult to read accurately; because it is not even with the "bed" of the unit, the paper being cut actually 'floats' about 1/8 inch above the measurement scale, making it harder to accurately read where you are. I attempted to cut an 8 1/2 inch X 11 inch sheet of paper exactly in half...the shadow cast by the paper and the fact that the paper is not lying directly on top of the scale put the cut off by 1/8"-1/16". The cutter itself worked beautifully, giving a crisp, clean edge.

I can see what others have reported about the cutter potentially abraiding the guide wire - it sounds like a violin string when I shunt the cutter head back and forth, from the vibrations of the wire (I haven't used it enough to experience what some have...the wire breaking completely). If you decide to get this unit, I'd recommend that you be sure to press DOWN on the cutter head, not putting any lateral pressure on it, so it is less likely to rub so hard against the guide wire.

Years ago I purchased a full-size Fiskars rotary paper cutter; it's substantially heavier than this unit, has a full-sized graph-scored bed and a rotary blade. I find the insert cutting mat portion of the trimmer dulls the blades quickly and needs replacing often. It is, however, amazingly accurate in measuring for cuts. It is also harder to store, more awkward to get out for a few quick paper cuts and does not transport well. This unit being reviewed is compact enough that it could be kept handy in a desk drawer (a long desk drawer...

The first thing I noticed when getting this paper cutter is how light it is. Light is good, but in this case it feels very flimsy and junky.

Also, the description says it can cut 7-20 sheets of paper. I couldn't get through more the 4.

If you have an occasional need for a paper cutter to do basic cutting and not many sheets this might be an option.

If you need something that can do heavy duty type cutting, including thick paper I would pass.

Overall, I've had good luck with this cutter. It's not perfect for what I do, but it's as good as any other cutter of this style.

Cutting paper:
I don't cut paper very often, but I'd say 3 or 4 sheets of standard copy paper will cut nicely, and just 1 or 2 pieces of card stock at a time, depending on weight. This has a shallow blade, so if you're cutting lots of paper and need to cut thick stacks, this cutter is not for you. You really need a guillotine cutter for that kind of work.

What I cut:
I use my cutter to cut sheets of vinyl decals, which are pretty thick. There is a waxy backing paper, the adhesive vinyl, plus a layer of over-laminate. With such a thick material, I only cut one sheet thickness at a time. This cutter can handle 2 of my decal sheets, but I like precise cuts and the sheets slide against each other easily, so I just cut one at a time. I've chosen not to use a guillotine cutter for this work because I want my cuts to be extremely precise, and I want to work quickly. I have my decal sheets printed with cut guides, which allows me to line up my cuts quickly.

Blades
I'm often cutting hundreds of vinyl decal sheets at a time, so my blades dull quickly. I tried the Fiskars cutter because I could buy a 2-pack of replacement blades for half the price of a new cutter. Previously, I had been using a similar cutter made by Westcott, but I was having trouble finding replacement blades, and I didn't want to buy a whole new cutter every time my blade was dull.

The wire guide:
I wasn't sure what I thought of the wire guide at first. I kept getting my sheets hung up on the wire as I slid the sheet along. Now that I've gotten used to it, I don't get caught up on the wire very often, and I generally like the feature.
