Fiskars X7 Hatchet, 14-Inch
Superior Bade Design
Fiskars axes are crafted with a proprietary grinding technique that provides a sharper edge for better contact and cleaner cuts. They also stay sharp longer and include low-friction coating.
More Power at Impact
Perfected weight distribution provides an optimal power-to-weight ratio that increases swing speed to multiply power, much like an aluminum baseball bat.
With stronger-than-steel FiberComp handles and inseparable insert-molded heads, Fiskars axes don’t just outlast others — they’re virtually impossible to break.
Fiskars Corporation is a leading global supplier of consumer products for the home, garden and outdoors. The world famous orange-handled scissors are a registered trademark of Fiskars Corporation. Another easy-to-carry choice perfect for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, the X7 Hatchet is ideal for chopping kindling and small- to medium-sized logs. Like every X-Series Hatchet or Axe, the X7 combines perfected weight distribution, advanced blade geometry, an ultra-sharp edge and virtually unbreakable design to maximize your performance. This combination of features allows the blade to bite deeper when chopping. With more blade penetration on each swing, you can chop more wood in less time, with less effort and hand strain.

PROS: Lightweight. Ergonomics. Blade comes sharp.
CONS: Soft metal. Chips easily.
SUMMARY: I'd an avid camper and having a tool for fire wood or cutting is essential. I purchased the Fiskars X7 3 years ago and it's worked well since. The blade has several small chips in it and the flat portion is all dented from using it as a hammer but it's still kicking. My only wish is that the metal was harder... Or at the very least, the flat portion to be a harder element. Fiskars makes axes that "chop" and ones that "split". I'd rather have 1 axe that can do both rather than have 2 that does 1 thing really well. I ended up buying a $10 hand axe for splitting but it's heavy as hell.
ADVICE: Make a small version of a splitter. I love the size/length of the X7 14 inch but would love a harder metal overall and with the blade flaring out like their mauls.
I love the coating on the blade, making it feel a bit glossy and therefore helping it to slide through the wood when splitting. I do understand the complaints some have about the composite of the axe handle going around the outside of the blade material, thereby exposing it to scraping damage when splitting wood, but frankly the material holding the axe head is so tough, other than cosmetic, I don't think it will be compromised for a very long time due to regular use.
I'll admit that I was disappointed that the entire handle of this axe is hollow, but I can't take any starts away from it because the darn thing seems incredibly strong. Just be aware that the hollow handle is part of the shock absorption design I suppose. A surprise, but new tricks are fine when they work, and this seems to. The "sheath" for the blade is pretty handy too, and allows you to throw the axe into a bag or drawer without worrying about cutting other stuff. It only covers one side however, so if you lightly oil your axe, keep in mind that one side of the blade is exposed even when in the holder.
The axe came pretty shard, and I went out to split some wood with it just for fun. It excels at splitting kindling, so much so that you'd better not have anyone standing to the sides of you when you do it. The wood jumps off this blade.
For now, it lives in my bug out bag, and we take it camping. Great product.
It was a very hard task either way you look at it, but for a 14" hatchet to accomplish this was insane to me!!! Good quality blade and easy to swing around. The balance for me seemed perfect and made easy work of all brush tasks and small tasks. Like I mentioned above I even cut down a huge tree with it! This is my go to buddy for the woods and I am very pleased :)
