I bought this because I got the fitbit secondhand and it did not come with the dongle, but I set it up and created an account with my smart phone and rarely check out my data on my computer. I don't think it's necessary to have if you're fine using the phone app.
EDIT 9/26/16: I had the dongle plugged into my computer, as they suggest you leave in plugged in at all times. I don't usually carry my computer in my backpack, but I happened to today without its case on, and the glue holding the dongle together completely came apart and the whole thing fell apart (see photo). I had to use tweezers to get the metal part out of the USB socket. On top of that, I had only used fitbit on my computer a few times because I usually use the iphone app. Overall, I would not recommend this and will not be re-buying it.

I ordered this after searching online and learning that I needed a dongle in order to access more of my Fitbit data. I learned that I needed to download Fitbit Connect to my computer and the app would prompt me to connect my Fitbit through the dongle. I should have downloaded the app first. I would have learned that Fitbit Connect downloads as Fitbit and displays a dashboard similar to the dashboard in my account on the official Fitbit site. My data has shown up on the official Fitbit dashboard for years without a dongle. No prompt appeared to connect my tracker via the dongle and my data was in the newly downloaded Fitbit app. I will be returning the dongle. This was a total waste of time, money and a USB port.

Let me rant a bit more. None of the Premium data that Fitbit users pay $9.99 a month for is displayed in either the "Fitbit Connect" app dashboard or the official Fitbit website dashboard. Fitbit uses that data, but I can't even see it except in my phone app???? I chatted with a Fitbit rep and learned how to download data from my account. It's very basic data that any Fitbit user can see. None of the Premium data is in this data download.

I returned this but have several as they are for all but the two oldest (no longer made) models (ultra and classic). This will work automatically with all current models (unlike the unit-specific charging cords for Zip, One, Flex, Charge, Charge HR, Surge). The charging cords are all different and the Zip requires a new battery occasionally as it is not rechargeable. I recommend having one of these on hand if you will be keeping your Fitbit as they do go bad.

I'm glad that FitBit knows we aren't perfect and provides replacement chargers and dongles at a reasonable price, because I've had to buy both now :p
