1.0 out of 5 stars Great function, terrible build quality.

So, I'll try and keep this fair and outline the good but I'll stress right now that my experience with this Fitbit has been really poor.

So in terms of function, notifying me of texts, monitoring heart rate and steps, yea, it's fantastic. Links up to my phone nicely and I use the silent alarm to get me up. When I got it (although bulky) I was thrilled.

So why one star? The build quality.

I bought this originally and cleaned as advised by Fitbit and most nights I take it off to be honest. Anyway, with my first one, little air bubbles appeared under the strap and gradually got bigger and bigger. So I held off submitting a review and complained, got a new FitBit surge and all was well in the world. 3-4 months down the line, it happened again and again I complained but I was doing everything as instructed, regular cleaning and taking it off for periods so I got a 2nd replacement.

Now, I'm at the point beyond complaining to FitBIt, quite frankly can't be bothered going through the rigmarole again, from my point of view it has happened (bubbling and peeling away of strap) again so I just thought it best to leave a review with pictures so that maybe other folk think twice before purchasing the surge.

I can't fault the customer service and I can't fault the functionality of the fit bit but when you pay around £150 for a product you could get a clone of for about £40, you expect good quality...this is really poor.

Final thoughts, buy an Alta? Or the new one that you can change the straps on and you'll get more longevity. I'm now looking at Samsung Gear S3 - again the interchangeable strap would solve this problem.

Ta,
B

In short the Fitbit Surge has good functionality however the strap has been poorly designed. Not just once but twice!
I can however say that Fitbit customer support is quite good as they provided a quick replacement. All be it for a known fault in their product.

Let me explain. As others have already commented in the reviews the strap that is separate from the main body of the watch deteriorates over time. The first Surge I had started to develop cracks around the screws attaching the strap to the body. This was after about 6 months of use. For the £185 I pad for the thing I would expect better foresight in design. I contacted Fitbit and they sent me out a replacement.. Great!
But Fitbit's tale of poor design does not stop there. The replacement I received was an updated design with a new strap. Excellent I thought, they have fixed the poor choices of the past. The new version appears to have the strap attached to the body and then a plastic cover over the top. This plastic cover has now started to peel away and frankly makes the watch look ridiculous. I'd actually only been using the replacement full time for about 8 month as I wanted to get the most out of the old one first.

So I spent £185 on a watch that now looks crap and between the two I've owned neither have made it past a year without falling apart. This is a real shame as the Fitbit app is well designed and enjoyable to use.
Unless Fitbit can show me they actually understand why these issues have developed and have carried out proper QC testing I will be avoiding their products in favour of a serious sports watch manufacturer. I almost bought the Garmin Vivoactive over this.. what a shame.
