About Recumbent Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out.

The term recumbent literally means "lying down." Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

I love it! End of March 2006. I finally decided I needed to do something about my weight. 6'1" and 276 pounds. I had to be realistic, I knew I wouldn't actually take time to go someplace and work out. I wanted something I could get a good workout with and make use of existing time. I knew that I would be watching tv for a couple hours a day on most days. I picked this bike for its compforable seat and realatively small size. Fits in the living room without looking obnoxious. Its also very quiet so it does not make it difficult to watch tv. or read using the book holder. I put it together in less than an hour.

I started using it on almost the 3rd level of resistance and did 1/2 hour a day. Each week I increased. After the first 6 weeks I had cranked it up to the highest resistance setting and was basing my workout on calories burned. It is now December 18th and I get on the bike everyday except Saturday. I ride until I burn 1500 calories on the highest reistance. equivelent to riding uphill I guess. It generally takes about 72 minutes and works out to an 11 mile ride. (on Thanksgiving night I jumped on for double and banged out 22 miles..lol couldnt stand the idea of not losing weight that week). Since starting I have lost no less than 1 pound per week, but for the first 6 months I averaged 3 pounds per week. I now weigh 202 and have reduced my body fat from 40% to 24%. Thats right over 70 pounds. Only when I got down to about 210 did I start hitting a wall that Im struggling getting through.

If you watch tv at night like most americans then you have the time to use this bike. If you hop on during one of your shows or the news or whatever, you can bang out the calories and change your life.

P.S.

This bike was great - for the first 3 months. Then the console died. I called customer service who asked me if I had changed the batteries. Yes, I told her. Then she said no more parts were available. Now I use it to hang laundry. I won't be buying an Edge bike any time soon.

Bike worked good in beginning months. After a little sitting and fresh batteries, console would not power up. I couldn't give it negative or no stars, so a 1 rating will have to do.

I always need to exercise to burn off calories and this exercise bike helps a lot. What attracted me to it are the rugged design and the recumbent design for more riding comfort over long periods of time. The unit features a sliding beam construction to allow you to adjust the seat to your size and the frame is very sturdy. I am a big guy and it worked fine for me. The entire unit is enclosed so it looks more professional and you don't have wheels or chains exposed.

It has a digital monitor that tracks your progress by monitoring your speed, time, distance and calories burned. It also has a built in pulse monitor if you hold the hand grips to measure your heart information. The unit has 8 adjustable levels of pedaling resistance based on a magnetic resistance system. I like that it has large pedals and they have a strap on them to better hold your feet onto the pedals.

You can have the display monitor one parameter or have it set into scan mode to monitor each parameter for a few seconds and then change to the next one. It has a nice tray to set a book or a Kindle onto to read and a location for a drink. I actually set my iPhone into the drink holder and listen to music or audio books and the "drink well" acts as an amplifier for the sound. I find the seat comfortable and I have a bad back so this design helps a lot.

There are 12 built in exercise programs or you can just adjust the resistance manually. It does use batteries and it takes 4 C cells and they only last a few months of hard use. I modified mine and installed a small flat screen TV on it and I can watch TV while I ride. I included photos of the control display and of the TV I added to the bike.

I have used this bike for years without any problems and it has withstood a lot of work.

Highly recommend this recumbent bike. Not only is it programmable and challenging, it's also solid, durable, and built to last. We've had ours for a few years and it's been the most dependable piece of equipment we've ever had. Would definately buy again! Your not going to find too many of these new, but if you run accross one on the second-hand market, don't even think twice. Far and away better than anything else in it's price range.
