We live in a world of politically-correct viruses. I too, never thought of any form of prejudice, racism, or horror. I was 7 years old when I first had this book read to me by my elementary school librarian. I've talked with classmates over the years and one book we all recall with nothing less than fond memories and wonderful recollections is 'The Five Chinese Brothers'. My favorite has always been the brother who held the sea in his mouth so the people could collect the fish.
If everyone would refuse political correctness as a way of life and get back to reality, I believe the world would be void of finger-pointing and ill judgements.
Being human means, no boundaries. Being human means being open to the world and the people who inhabit it. This book applies to all walks of life and I never thought twice about anything regarding all the Chinese looking alike, nor did it ever register in my 35 years of memory ... I simply remembered 5 brothers, who had super abilities and who crusaded for the good.
As others make the point to challenge the 'appropriateness' and content of this book, I must also point out that the 'big bad wolf' of Red Riding Hood was positioning himself to 'eat' little red riding hood. Hansel and Gretel were thrown in an oven by the witch/old hag. Sleeping Beauty was poisoned by the evil witch.
Having enjoyed all those children's stories, I don't find any evidence that I am scarred as an adult nor required therapy or sheltering by my parents because of the stories.
Jonah was eaten by a whale. And the list goes on.
Enjoy this book ... :)
