December 1941. America teeters on the brink of war, and in Honolulu, Hawaii, police detective Joe McGrady is assigned to investigate a homicide that will change his life forever. Because the trail of murder he uncovers will lead him across the Pacific, far from home and the woman he loves; and though the U.S. doesn't know it yet, a Japanese fleet is already steaming toward Pearl Harbor.
This extraordinary novel is so much more than just a gripping crime story—it's a story of survival against all odds, of love and loss and the human cost of war. Spanning the entirety of World War II, FIVE DECEMBERS is a beautiful, masterful, powerful novel that will live in your memory forever.

"An electrifying thriller set in the Pacific theatre of World War II" - The Straits Times
"'Five Decembers' is a police procedural, a war story, a cultural history, a thriller, a romance, a tourist’s guide to Honolulu. It’s everything. It’s too much. But so what? This book is awesome. So’s the writing. Kestrel’s lean prose and cinematic eye makes an impossible story seem probable, even likely." - Expressed

“Five Decembers” begins on Thanksgiving, 1941. Honolulu police detective Joe McGrady is sent to investigate a dead body discovered in a remote sugar cane plantation barn. He finds two bodies, a young man and woman, mutilated and tortured. He seemingly closes the case when the killer soon returns to eliminate any evidence. McGrady eliminates him instead. But the murder victim was the nephew of Admiral Husband Kimmel, commander of the Pacific fleet, who wants McGrady to stay on the case to find and punish everyone involved in the murders. McGrady discovers that the mastermind behind the crimes has fled Hawaii for Hong Kong. The detective follows the trail and arrives shortly before the Japanese invade the island. From there, it’s five long Decembers until 1945 before McGrady finds closure in the case.
The author uses the historical backdrop of “Five Decembers” well. He doesn’t overload readers with period detail just to create atmosphere. He only provides enough subtext to explain the characters’ actions and motivations. As McGrady makes his way west from Honolulu to Wake Island to Hong Kong, readers know what will happen on December 7. That historical deadline adds to the suspense as readers wonder how close McGrady will get to his quarry and what will happen if he doesn’t catch the elusive mastermind by then. I don’t want to spoil any of the book’s surprises by revealing McGrady’s fate once the war breaks, but it’s a harrowing, historically accurate ordeal. Ironically, recent events have given the wartime scenes even more impact. As I read the book’s middle third, the author’s description of the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong reminded me of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in some details.
“Five Decembers” is a classic noir novel with Joe McGrady, a prototypical hardboiled hero. He’s cynical but principled and dedicated enough to follow a case through for five years. He also gets involved with several women, with the war wreaking havoc on those relationships. McGrady makes Christmas plans with his girlfriend Molly, but doesn’t return home until years later. His relationships all have a melancholy, bittersweet feeling. These women are emblematic of the book’s complex characterizations. There are no black-and-white characters, and several people turn out to differ greatly from what they first seem. And behind everything is John Smith, the master villain. At least, that’s the name on his fake passport when McGrady pursues him to Hong Kong. Smith is one of the best literary villains I’ve encountered in a long time, a mastermind worthy of a James Bond story.
James Kestrel is the pen name of Jonathan Moore, who has written several good suspense novels under his own name. “Five Decembers” elevates his writing to a new level. The book recently won the Edgar Award for Best Mystery Novel and deservedly so. It’s a brilliant 21st-century noir that is true to its historical and thematic backgrounds. It’s a great mystery, hardboiled police procedural, historical war drama, thriller, and romance all in one. Fans of these genres should set aside about five hours for a thoroughly engaging and entertaining read.
But that’s what “Five Decembers” by James Kestrel is – a noir novel of the 1940s. It’s also a great mystery, winner of the 2022 Edgar Award for Best Novel by the mystery Writers of America. And it’s a flat-out great story, escaping the mystery genre and taking the reader to the real-life days of World War II in the Pacific.
Joe McGrady is a police detective in Honolulu. It’s late November 1941, right before Thanksgiving. Joe is a military veteran and not your “come-up-through-the-department’ policeman. He doesn’t like how some cops get confessions, but he keeps his head down.
He’s called to a murder, a particularly gruesome one involving a college student and a young woman. Both have been tortured before being killed. The college student turns out to be the nephew of the commanding admiral at Honolulu. The girl is of Japanese heritage. How they came together, and how they managed to get tortured and killed, is a mystery.
Joe is given the case, with the blessing of the admiral, who wants to know who killed his nephew. He also wants the killer or killers brought to justice, inside or outside a courtroom. Joe’s commanding officer at the police department would just as soon seen the case filed away. But because of the pressure from the admiral, and clues left behind by one of the killers, Joe begins a journey, island hopping across the western Pacific to track the killer. He ends up in Hong Kong, and in a jail, no less, on Dec, 8, 1941, which across the International Date Line is Dec. 7, 1941 in Hawaii. Hong Kong is under siege by the Japanese. And soon Joe finds himself on a slow boat – bound for Tokyo.
It's the kind of story that’s difficult to put down, for things like sleep and eating. Joe will return to Honolulu at war’s end, but what happens in between makes him determined to solve his case. And for good measure, Kestrel throws in two possible love stories.
James Kestrel is the pen name for author Jonathan Moore. He’s led a rather eclectic professional life – bar owner, criminal defense investigator, and now an attorney practicing throughout the Pacific. He’s lived in Taiwan, New Orleans, and West Texas, and currently lives in Volcano, on the big island of Hawaii.
If you’re looking for an exciting, riveting, noir novel about World War II, read “Five Decembers,” lurid cover and all. Even if you’re not, read it anyway. It’s that good of a story.
