The book has a profoundly serious intent—how to balance intimacy and independence in yourself and with others through understanding the five elements. What might have been inexplicable behavior by a loved one is understood. With understanding, communication is elevated to a higher level. Everyday conversations are transformed when the inertia of repetitious quarrel is avoided. Long-held pathologies might even be eradicated. The integrity of each individual is respected.
Don’t expect to read this book straight through. The humor will catch you. Out-loud laughter was part and parcel of my experience in reading this book. You will find yourself recognizing loved ones in Dondi’s descriptions. A cherished brother whose favorite Saturday outing is shopping at Costco was an easily spotted Water Element.
I found myself laughing throughout this most pleasurable read. It is so much fun, it might be easy to breeze through. But, there are no throwaway messages here. I often stopped to re-read the pithy, last sentences of paragraphs. For instance, “…we are more complex than the five types…” And, “conflicts and differences are rarely personal. More often they are brought on by elements being out of balance.”
The final 53 pages of the book, the Afterword, were written by sister-author, Titanya Dahlin. Far from a recap of the previous pages, Titanya explains how the five elements look different in children. In fact, “young children go through the five elements many times every day. Before age 7, children cycle through all the elements to find their own.”
For parents, this book is of inestimable value. Understanding the five elements helps avoid clashes and unravel hurt feelings. Understanding how and when one of the five elements plays out in your child can mean the difference between daily strife and a peaceful household.
This book, The Five Elements, is a family affair. The Forward is by Donna Eden, mother of Dondi and Titanya and renowned pioneer in energy medicine. Donna writes candidly of her experience as the mother of two decidedly different, exceptional daughters. Dondi’s primary element is Wood while Titanya’s is Earth. This might have been the setting for strife and acrimony. But the Five Elements were an everyday topic and the girls flourished in caring and respect for one another.
This is a 5-star book – a treat.
