Five Keys to Powerful Business Relationships will help the reader identify what relationships they have and how to effectively deal with them.
This book is well-written while not necessarily very engaging to the reader. It isn’t one of those business books that holds the reader’s interest. However, it does contain a lot of helpful information.
We give Five Keys to Powerful Business Relationships four stars. It is very informative, but lacks a little on style in that it isn’t particularly entertaining.

Sallie Sherman, Joseph Sperry and Steve Vucelich, the authors of Five Keys to Powerful Business Relationships, have provided some powerful tools to building stronger, better relationships.
The are some powerful reasons for managers/leaders to read this book. "There is no problem that is not, at one level or another, a relationship problem." According to Maribeth Kuzmeski, "The key determinant at the top of all business strategies, talents and expertise is the ability to connect with people on a meaningful level." "Without relationships, you may be brilliant, but it is unlikely that the world will get the benefit of your brilliance."
The authors produced a well-researched and well written book. It is written in a conversational style and includes a lengthy Bibliography and Notes.
Part one of the book covers an "Overview of the Five Keys", Part 2 covers the Five Keys in great detail and Part 3 covers Virtual Relationships and the Five Keys. At the end of each chapter is a section - Points to Remember that covers an Overview, specific points for Individuals, for Teams and for Organizations.
The specific keys are: 1) Connect first; Then focus on task 2) Learn by walking in another's shoes 3) Whether people trust you is often up to you 4) Share information to increase your personal power 5) Manage yourself before you manage others. Each key is explained in detail, with a liberal use of real life examples. There are numerous illustrations that help to clarify the concept being discussed. At the end of Part 2 is a series of very deep questions arranged by each Key. If you spend the time answering these questions you will have gained significant value from this book
Of all the keys, I found Key 5 - Manage Yourself to be the most powerful. This might be only true for me or from my perspective but I believe this is where most managers/leaders really fall down. In my experience far too many managers/leaders are focused on changing/managing their direct reports that they fail to manage themselves. Henry Mintzberg is quoted as saying, "We need leaders with human skills, not professionals with academic credentials."
There are some very important lessons in the Key 5 section: "Seek useful feedback - something you can act on - not judgments or critiques, which often tell you what didn't work but not what you can do to improve your approach."
If you are a manager/leader looking to improve your effectiveness, this book will certainly provide a lot of food-for-thought and action.

Business books seem to like to give us numbered lists and prescriptions and this one is no different. We get five keys introduced, then each one gets it's own chapter filled with anecdotes, evidence and a nice summary for review. Among the keys, we learn the importance of empathy, connecting to others before we start a task, and trust, among other things. Again, it should be obvious, because we know these things in our personal lives, but perhaps the workaday world of business provides to much focus on things like the bottom line. It's good information and presented readably enough.
There are additional chapters on building relationships online with social media and three challenges are given to leaders for building relationships in business. There is a nice annotated bibliography for specific further reading as well as a general, larger bibliography and chapter notes. I read a lot of business books. I look for readability and applicability. This book had both.

This book is easily the best I have read on the subject, and has been written by experts in the field.
If you want to immediately improve your business and life, read this book. Ignore at your own peril.
