The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom is by far my favorite book in the world. I'm an avid reader, but this was the most significant book at a point in my life (high school) where I was lost, confused, searching for my place in the world, and reeling for the loss of my grandmother, who was one of the most important people in my life. I was searching for a faith in something, and I picked up this book. It changed everything.
The premise of the book is that when you die, you meet five people. They are not always the five most important people in your life (parents, grandparents, spouses, children, etc), but sometimes people who you met in passing or who you'd rather forget. Sometimes it's someone you don't really even know. But they're always someone who has had an important impact on your life.
In The Five People You Meet in Heave, the story follows Eddie as he meets his five people and his life's meaning is revealed to him. He meets five people, only one of who he really would have thought would be on his 'five people' list. The story is heartbreaking and moving and life affirming. I am still a sobbing mess every time I re-read it. I can't tell you how many highlights and pencil marks my hard copy of this has, and probably just as many for my kindle version. Yes, I have both a hard copy and a kindle version. I treasure my original copy, but love having the digital version at my fingertips everywhere I go. This book is THAT good. It's the kind of book you pass along to a friend who is struggling or a teenager in need of guidance and searching for the meaning of life. If you only read one book, make it this one!

Honestly, wanted to read this book for a long time. I've been recommended it by family and friends, good reviews encouraged finally to open this world of "heaven". Obviously when you have high expectations falling to reality is hard. I love philosophy, I love good lessons, I love good ideas. The thing is, those ideas, those lessons you are supposed to discover in the book, well based on the plot, you are supposed to discover after death, is something you are learning growing up. I've learned that things happens for a reason, sacrifices are part of life, forgiveness is essential, I've learned about love way before I opened this book. Why out of sudden this is a turning point of worldview for thousands? Cliche characters, cliche stories, easy strings to manipulate emotions. Most of "lessons" and "people" are not developed and plain, simplicity of this is overkill. If you want to discover something catching your imagination, heart and mind, I would recommend avoiding reading it. There are brilliant masterpieces in world classic, this book seems as a shadow of unfinished draft. Heaven concept is something unreasonable and illogical. This happens when author is trying to make feelings and emotions be the rulers of the life. There is no reason here and there is no purpose, there is no hidden knowledge. Just attempts to rediscover moral, and I know for sure ancient philosophers have done that better. Would not ever recommend this book to anyone.

I read this book, because it was assigned to my children for the summer. I expected a good story, but I didn't expect such real characters or the beautiful imagery that makes you feel like you're there. There are words of wisdom throughout the book, but the main message is absolutely beautiful. I would like to be more specific. However, I feel like that would spoil the book for future readers. I gave this book five stars, because I feel like I received a hug from heaven. It really blew me away. Read it and listen to it on Audible.

This book is not new and has been reviewed hundreds of times so I'll keep my thoughts short and sweet on it.
When Eddie died in a tragic accident he met five different people that intersected his life in one way or another. They were meant to give him clarity and answer the question "Why was I here?" Some of the people were expected but others were not.
The Five People You Meet in Heaven was a short and easy book to read. I flew through the pages and was anxious to know who Eddie would meet and what they would bring to the table. Many things about his life were explained and he was given clarity on a number of things as well.
I enjoyed every minute of this book. It doesn't get preachy or speak of religion but tells one story of what could possibly happen after the end. I appreciate that about it and therefore think that it would appeal to a large number of people.

I read this book on the recommendation of a friend, but I just couldn’t relate to the story at all. I was quite pleased to be able to finish it, though I must admit to doing a lot of quick page turning.
In all fairness, many friends of mine have loved the story. I found it simplistic and shallow. It just wasn’t for me, but this was my fault - the title should have been a clear warning.

This book was recommended to me and it took me 3 years to buy it, always in the back of my mind of something to do but never done. Then when I finally got it, I consumed it in one morning. I’m not usually a big reader honestly this is the 3rd or so book I’ve read cover to cover since I was in school but I simply could not put this book down! It is such a powerful book it moved me to tears many times reading it. I can’t recomend it enough!

Oh my gosh! I loved reading this book! It makes you think about so many things in your life. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly religious in any sense, just a very interested way to think of heaven and why things happened to you while you were alive. I will recommend this book for the reat of my life and I can’t wait to read it again. It is a very quick read. I couldn’t put it down!! You will love it!

What a superb book with which to start my reading decade!
I was lucky enough to end the twenty-tens with a brilliant read, The Way: A Girl Who Dared To Rise. Picking another great book with which to start the ‘twenties has made me very happy.
Eddie is a fairground maintenance man with tonnes of experience of both life and his work. He is an Army veteran. On his eighty-third birthday, he meets with a tragic death while trying to save the life of a little girl who is a split second away from being crushed by one of the rides.
Death is not the end. It is the beginning.
Eddie arrives in Heaven and meets five people who have either had a significant effect on his life or whose lives he has significantly affected. He discovers much more than he ever knew about the back stories of his interactions with these people.
The book is beautifully crafted and very thought-provoking.
One of the people whom he meets in Heaven was never known to him during his life, yet she had a significant effect upon that life.
Another, predictably, so this is not really a spoiler, is his wife. Their love for each other made my heart boom and brought tears to my eyes. All five of the meetings stirred deep emotions in me.
There were several passages which resonated deeply with me.
As an adult runner, I have often spread my wings as I run through the countryside and imagined that I am an aeroplane, so I loved this:
It might have seemed ridiculous to anyone watching, this white-haired maintenance worker, all alone, making like an airplane. But the running boy is inside every man, no matter how old he gets.
Having lost my own father in March 2019, this short extract sprang off the page at me:
Through it all, despite it all, Eddie privately adored his old man, because sons will adore their fathers through even the worst behaviour. It is how they learn devotion. Before he can devote himself to God or a woman, a boy will devote himself to his father, even foolishly, even beyond explanation.
Although there a many more quotes which I could cite in this review, I’ll leave you with this one on forgiveness. It ties in well with another book that I read in the past year, Forgiveness Made Easy by Barbara J Hunt:
“Learn this from me. Holding anger is a poison. It eats you from inside. We think that hating is a weapon that attacks the person who harmed us. But hatred is a curved blade. And the harm we do, we do to ourselves. “Forgive, Edward. Forgive. Do you remember the lightness you felt when you first arrived in heaven?”
This really is a wonderful book. You should read it.

This is one of my favourite books, because of this book I became a Mitch Albom fan and read all of his novels, most of them are pretty good, but never comes close to this one, the Five People You Meet in Heaven has everything you would want to have in a novel. It talks about love, talks about God, talk about forgiveness, talks about the meaning of life in such a creative and interesting way, It involves unexpected surprises which grabs you and keeps you reading with TEARS! I have recommended this book to a few friends and all of them like it. Even a big strong man will shed a tear! Wonderful, inspirational, and heart warming! To me, it is a MUST READ!

A beautiful and flawlessly choreographed book.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 9, 2020Verified Purchase
Dear big-hearted and flawlessly choreographed book,
Why did I not find you sooner?
I count myself unmistakably lucky to have read something so fundamentally perfect that words alone cannot praise it.
This goes way beyond storytelling. It’s a light in the dark, the up when you’re down, a balm to soothe even the deepest pain. It’s the patient thread of providence that invisibly and inexplicably binds us all.
As I have fallen hopelessly head over heels in love with Eddie the maintenance man and the Five people he met in Heaven I am acutely aware that no other book may ever compare. But it’s one I can see myself returning to often.
So, dear book, thank you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A quick read with a long lasting effect
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 20, 2019Verified Purchase
A lot of other reviews mention that this is a thought provoking read and I have to agree with them. It's a tale of a very complex life and it would be easy to mistake the clever simplicity of the telling for a lack of skill on the author's part - indeed a lot of reviewers do appear to have done so but I believe they have missed the point - that simplicity is intentional and absolute genius. We're all on the inside of our own lives, looking out, which means we only see ourselves from our own perspective and have little idea of how we impact others. This book made me see beyond my own peripheral view and helped me realise that everything I do has a Butterfly Effect on everyone else, no matter how tiny. A quick read with a long lasting effect.
