Author Ilan Dvir weaves a fantastic sci-fi fantasy tale, with intriguing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader's attention from the beginning. The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that's something I really look for in a good book.
The book description says it all; 'A sharp knock in the middle of the night awakens Henri and Aline. They discover on their doorstep a swaddled baby with only a mysterious ring wrapped in her blankets. They decide to keep their find a secret and tell the world she is theirs, not knowing that every secret comes at a price. They name her Rose.
On their thirteenth birthdays, Rose and four other teenagers from across the globe discover that they are The Five Shields, tasked with protecting the world’s fate and the balance of good and evil. All they have in common is a mysterious, powerful gem. On a life-changing journey, they discover untold powers hidden within them.
The Five Shields must fight to free the lost souls before it is too late. But first they must defeat sinister, dark forces hell-bent on their total destruction. If the Shields succeed, light will triumph; if they fail, darkness will reign. Who will prevail?'
Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself to find out! But I will say it's well worth the read. It's my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed.
This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a spellbinding journey!
It’s one of those books that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader. I will say, however, that the younger reader of the sci-fi fantasy genre will love having a nibble on this one!
If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Ilan Dvir in the future. I would definitely recommend this book and would love to see it adapted for the Silver Screen. Five stars from me.
This book is like Harry Potter meets King Arthur and, since I like both, I liked it very much. It's fun, it's a page-turner, it makes you think - everything you need from a good book. I like the idea that the kids came to the world they are fighting for the Good during their sleep. So, while they are dreaming in this world, their souls are very awake in some other world. Very awake, alive and can be injured and die.
Also, like the fact that the author has chosen the thirteenth birthday as a moment in which child is still a child but not a child anymore. And I like the way author shows that change of status in his characters. They are still kids, but now they have their duties, obligations, they have to learn that everything you do has consequences and most of all, that everything begins and ends in you. You are the one who makes decisions. And decisions make you the person you are.
Translated from Hebrew to English, ‘The Five Shields and the Lost Souls’ by Ilan Dvir literally transports us to the scene of action. The imagery is vivid and the language is simple, crisp and lucid. I must commend the translator. At no point did I feel I was reading a translation. In fact the whole book seemed like an original read.
The characters are well articulated. The initial hesitation over, the camaraderie witnessed between the five shields is relatable. Thrown together on a dangerous mission the way they hold together, become each other’s strength and go to any length to protect the other is projected beautifully.
The story has a lot to give. There are twists and turns, light moments as well as serious ones but what ultimately stays with the reader is the fact that the best is exposed in the worst situation. Our strengths often see light in the most trying times.
Simple and easy to read, the book is sure to enthrall fantasy lovers of all ages.
The plot is very fast-paced and although not that original (in parts similar to a variety of other young hero / chosen ones stories out there) it is entertaining, and we dive into the action right away. It’s ideal for middle graders and young adults, but even adults will enjoy the imaginative tale. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
