About the Author

Robert Michael Mayor has been a priest in the Episcopal Church in the United States for more than 17 years. In that time he has searched for an authentic expression of the Divine that is relevant to a contemporary context. He has degrees from San Diego State University and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, and has done extensive post-graduate study in spirituality, theology, philosophy, and psychology. He is a spiritual director, pastoral counselor, and the Rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he lives with his wife and son.

In Five Sutras of Jesus, the author, Fr. Robert Michael Mayor invites us, the readers, to see a unique perspective of Jesus by using a "second naivete" approach which is basically eliminating one's projections and interpretations of the scriptures, while being open, like a child, to letting the scriptures speak the truths of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. In so doing, one comes to know, or to be in relationship with Jesus Christ in the present, in the here and now. The book is filled with profound and in depth insights while being easy to read and understand. Fr. Mayor does an outstanding job of describing 5 themes or sutras found in the Gospels. Briefly, the 5 themes or sutras are: 1) All there is is now, 2)You are adored by the Divine, 3) Your relationship with God is about your relationship with others, 4) Morality is about relationships, not rules and 5) The Kingdom of God is at hand. When I had finished reading this book, I found myself wanting to read it again immediately. Thus, this is a book, that I know I will be returning to again and again to be renewed and refreshed with this living, here and now perspective of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Thank you, Fr. Mayor!

I recommend this book for anyone looking for a "different take". Fr. Mike is extremely bright, and a skilled teacher who has broad knowledge, and takes delight in sharing. His first person approach lets the reader walk through the concepts as if he/she were listening to Fr. Mike share his own personal experiences. Fr. Mike is committed to sharing his understanding of the presence of the Divine in each human, and in the essential nature of relationship one to another as a critical part of God's (the Divine's) call to humankind. Fr. Mike has noted in his sermons and observations that Christianity is an "Eastern" religion. Explore his views, as if in conversation with him, through this book.

Authority Rooted in Humility

In the forward to the second edition of "The Lord of the Rings", J.R.R. Tolkien wrote: "But I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations... I think that many confuse 'applicability' with 'allegory'; but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author."

Fr. Mike writes from a distinct 'I' perspective without limiting the scope of his message. In doing so he presents a Jesus who challenges many preconceptions without superimposing the authors views as singular truths. That rare quality results in a work that is clear and relatable.

Most importantly, the text empowered this reader to use the authors interpretations as springboards for personal reflection. In a world saturated with those who claim absolute certainty, Fr. Mike's humility is quite refreshing. Indeed that very humility establishes the authors authority. He offers an applicability invaluable to a reader in search of information but intent on forming his or her own conclusions.
